Earlier in this thread, you directed the same question to everyone, and you ended it by saying "serious question". Do you realize by adding "serious question", you were actually acknowledging that you know many members here regard you as a troll? That's a classic tell on your part. You added "serious question" because you know many do not take you seriously. I wonder why? Well, no, I don't, and apparently, neither do you.

I do still view the actual wording, "It's an actual question I have" as a tell, in your case. After all, why would anyone assume it was not an actual question on your part? I surmise it's because many regard you as a troll. Further, you had to know that yourself, in order to say "it's an actual question I have".

I'm feeling kind. The highest infection numbers modeled are based on the assumption nothing will be done to flatten the curve. And that was also behind Dr. Fauci's statement that the number of cases in the United States could number in the "many millions", if our containment and mitigation is very lacking. And, as I noted, the number of IC beds and ventilators can easily lead to very high mortality numbers. The very reason we absolutely have to flatten the curve. And the very reason pointing out the various models and concerns is the opposite of fearmongering. We WANT people to take this seriously. If it is not as bad as many experts fear it will be, that's great. But the very last thing we want is many people not giving a damn.

I had an older woman yesterday literally barge into me, her face within inches of my face, just to put stuff down on the pharmacy counter, while I was being waited on by the pharmacy tech. I was startled that she could be so ignorant. I thought "who does such a thing in the best of times, let alone now?" , I told my wife "she all but kissed me on the cheek!". I was pissed, but she looked lost and scared, so I said nothing.

My point was that the numbers you posted mean nothing because it's easy to have low numbers if you simply test people less.

The hospitals in northern Italy are overwhelmed, and 250 people died from coronavirus yesterday in Italy. Satellite photos have identified huge mass graves being excavated in Iran, with piles of lime to kill the stench. Overwhelming the ability of our hospitals to handle the virus is, and should be, our biggest concern. When you don't flatten the curve, that is when millions can die. That, and shortage of things like ventilators is when doctors may have to focus on those most likely to live, and not focus on those they think have worse odds of living. In addition, many doctors are begging to be tested themselves. Naturally! And there are obviously other health conditions that require an IC unit. But such patients who require that may not luck out.

You're the one pushing this scary time to panic 150,000,000 people sick narrative though Red. That's why people like the lady at the pharmacy are absolutely losing their minds. And when I question how 50% of the population will get sick I'm belittled and called a troll. This idea of mass hysteria being pushed needs to stop. Saying 150 million and millions are going to die without even providing any insight as to why or how is irresponsible.

I do apologize about my earlier commend but I'm being 100% honest when I think people are pushing and hoping for the worse. As I said, your saying all this Anti Trump garbage when we are in the early stages. Nobody knows whats going to happen yet you all sure can find a way to make it seem like the worst is already happening. It's not. It will get a lot worse but how about we wait for the results to happen before spewing hypotheticals are what so and so isn't doing?

@Red and thank you for the explanation. So basically were just talking worst case scenario which does nothing but spread fear based off insane estimates. Again... Stuff like this is why there is panic. That tweet said nothing about worst case scenarios if I'm not mistaken. Kind of important, right?

FWIW I've listened to three podcasts with infectious disease specialists and virologists and from what I've heard the estimates are anywhere from 6 to 15X worse than the flu. One thing all three agreed on is the virus will probably hit us worse than other countries because, to put it bluntly, this county is full of old, fat people. How that ultimately fits in the aforementioned models I have no idea but make of it what you will.

As for the "fear mongering" and comparisons to public reaction to H1NI in 2009 under Obama. The one thing I can tell you as a person that has managed people in some capacity for over 20 years - whenever a group is faced with an issue and has a mass underreaction immediately followed by a mass overreaction, it is always due to a lack of leadership and/or a lack of faith in leadership.

The other night, I had a patient in the ER where I work come in with fever, cough and shortness of breath. It would have been a routine visit, if not for the novel coronavirus currently sweeping the globe. The patient was concerned about the virus, and so were we. She had recently traveled to a conference in a country with known cases of COVID-19, as the disease caused by the coronavirus is called. She was middle-aged and had HIV, which we worried could increase her risk of serious illness from the virus. We contacted the department of health, where all testing in my state is currently performed, to request permission to test for the coronavirus.

The verdict? Denied....

Every ER doctor that I work with already has several stories like this.....

....why are we still facing such strict limitations on who we can test? There isn't a clear answer, but it seems to be a function of a woefully inadequate supply of test kits. In other words, what few tests we do have are being rationed for the people who need them most, like those requiring hospital admission....

Ashish Jha, director of the Harvard Global Health Institute, told NPR on Thursday that the United States' response has been "much, much worse than almost any other country that's been affected." He reached for words like "stunning," "fiasco" and "mind-blowing" to describe the situation.....

The total failure to ensure that adequate testing would be available will likely prove to be the single most important factor in why the United States has been unable to contain the outbreak. As previously reported by NPR, Hong Kong, Singapore and South Korea all deployed an aggressive testing strategy very early on. This allowed them to find the first few cases and isolate them, preventing unchecked community spread.....

This failure represents a profound abdication, at the highest levels of government, of responsibility to the health and security of the American population generally and of more vulnerable populations especially. Public health experts have known of the exceptional risk posed by novel coronaviruses for more than 20 years, but the current administration limited funding to the CDC and disbanded a White House unit expressly dedicated to preparing for a pandemic just like this one. Public statements from the top echelons of our government — false comparisons to seasonal influenza, wildly misleading promises about access to testing, reassurances that everything is "perfect" — continue to seed confusion and erode trust.....
