What's new

Desnews is singing Raja's praises

Check SG's for Lakers, Atlanta, Celtics, Miami, Spurs and some other teams;).. seriously, SG/SF who cares, just in general running plays for perimeter players was never in Jazz playbook under Sloan, I hoped Corbin will change it a bit to look more current.

Lakers have Kobe
Celtics have Allen
Miami has Wade
Spurs have Ginobili

Those are four of the best shooting guards, maybe even players, of our generation. Who on earth do the jazz have at SG that even comes CLOSE to comparison? Who have the Jazz EVER had at SG that was nearly as good (other than Horny)? You're telling me that we should scrap most of our offense, and dedicate more looks to Raja Bell and CJ Miles?

And using Atlanta as a model-team for a great offense is a bit of a joke. I felt it was best that I just pretended that you never mentioned them.

This won't be popular, but who do we have at any position that is on the level of those guys? Was just thinking today that we are low bbIQ (between some bone-headed vets and rooks that are just still too green), too many are lazy on the fundamentals (i.e. boxing out), and we don't have any elite players. Players with elite potential, certainly, but not currently.

Fixed.

At this current point in time: none. Could this change by the end of the season? Maybe. Who knows what the future will hold.

I agree, Cy, but I still put Favors in the potential category. Will he become an all-star? I think it's near 100%. Is he dominant right now? Hardly.

Yeah, I agree. That is why I changed "players with elite potential" to "player with elite potential".

I am still baffled that a nice 15 pt showing from Burks (regardless of whether it was garbage time or not) led to two DNPs. I know Ty will start Bell, but surely Burks deserves a little time to develop on the floor. Unless Bell's offense (and defense) blossom to the point that we can't afford to have him on the bench, ,we need to sit him a little and give a decent lottery pick a chance to grow.

Regardless, its easily one of the worst articles I've read from DesNews in recent memory

QFT.

For what it's worth, Jody Genessy usually writes pretty solid pieces. Apparently the Jazz coaching staff aren't the only ones to have left incriminating photos around for Raja to find.

It's true though. His 3-4 shots per game don't really have that huge of an affect on the game. It's not like if Raja goes 0-3 we are going to lose the game, and it's not like if Raja goes 3 for 3 we are a lock to win. Raja knows he isn't out there to score or play amazing, he is a placeholder for now and he has to play hard, which I think he does.

WEll, at least Raja has the good sense to know when he's struggling and that 0-3 doesn't turn into a 2-13 night, umlike some chuckers on the team. After TY's comments, we can confidently diagnose him as having Sloan Syndrome: an irrational fear of the unknown which causes one to stick with the status quo. It's closely related to battered wive's syndrome. On some level, Ty HAS to realize sticking with a washed-up vet will never lead to success, but he's just too afraid of change. KOC needs to save Corbin from himself by making a trade.

I would like to be a shooting a higher field-goal percentage," said the 12-year veteran, who's shooting 29.4 percent. "But, ultimately, I don't think it really matters if I make or miss my three shots in a game."

Bell doesn't care if he hits his shots. He doesn't think it matters because he only takes 3 shots a game. He'd like to hit his shots, but not enough to actually try hard.

Bell has got to go!

Bell didn't say he didn't care but his description is correct as is his understanding of his role. Much better than last years situation.

If he doesn't think it matters if his shot goes in he doesn't care.

One problem with Bell is that he is a liability on offense. An older Brewer with a better rep. Teams sag off him, and will do so more and more, as they know he is no longer a threat. That makes it tougher on everyone else. But what makes it a travesty that he is playing more minutes than our promising rookie is that what he is being hailed for is no longer top-shelf: defense. He is anything but a lock-down defender, and his ability to arguably play marginally better defense than Burks on some of the leagues 2's will not be the difference-maker in any games this season. It isn't like he is going to shut down Kobe so we can slap the Lakers or frustrate Wade into a terrible night so we beat the Heat. He just isn't enough of a difference maker, and is too much a liability on offense, to justify his time on the floor.

Start him to set a defensive tone, to show an example of playing hard, sure, fine, but pull him at the 8 minute mark unless he is really clicking and give Burks some burn when the minutes count.

Asked about continued lack of production from the starting shooting guard position — Raja Bell had zero points on 0-of-2 shooting in 19:03 — Jazz coach Tyrone Corbin said he's not concerned. Corbin praised Bell's defensive efforts, in addition to intangibles he brings to the game.

That's Corbin's reaction to Bell's performance against NOH.

If that's really how he feels he has no business being a starter. Not that he had any business being a starter before, but this should seal the deal imho.

He's taking four shots a game; if he makes 1, he's shooting 25%; if he makes 2, he's shooting 50%. Difference per game: 2 points.

Now, he may not be playing very good defense (I haven't been able to watch enough to judge). However, he's correct that his shooting percentage is not having a major effect.
