Does Lauri Get Traded?

Some follow up questions, what are you willing to trade those guys for/give up? At this stage in free agency, you might have to get creative but I think you can still got some stuff done.

I think Kessler is likely worth a solid first... like maybe not the golden ones but like Atlanta now has the 2025 Lakers pick. I think a fair deal would be 25 Lakers pick for Walker... but to make a deal you may have to settle for a worse one. The deal with Atlanta where we send out Walker and Clarkson and take back Capela and the protected Kings pick they own feels like a solid compromise and really realistic deal. Moves them further away from the tax this year. Clears more space for us next year. Doesn't wreak of complete tankiness. Sit Capela or cut him... but you'd lose some value.

Sexton is harder for me. Bigger contract, kind of a tough fit in some backcourts or situations, but I think he is worth 2 solid picks... but I don't know that you'd ever get that. He's the one that could come back and bite you. I think the Lakers would consider something like Sexton for DLo/Vincent and their 2029 pick and removing protections from 2027. Reroute or buyout for DLO (guessing he would give back a few million at least as he would have a decent market).

I think both of these are kind of 80-90% of value maybe... maybe you'd need to take a deeper cut to facilitate something. For the tank I think the discount is worth it.

I can think of $24 million reasons why he would and should do exactly that (the Jazz are the only team that can give him that money THIS year through renegotiation) if that were a scenario.

That is why I said not a big chance, but a non-zero chance. Some players do value the ability to choose their own team over wasting their prime on a bad team like the current Jazz. It happened before. We don't know how Lauri feels and how frustrated and hungry for wins he may be at this point of his career. There is this non-zero chance and the Jazz would be foolish to completely disregard it.

You talk as if getting the top 5 picks and drafting a franchise cornerstone(s) with them is such a random, lottery-based luck. But well-run franchises do it all the time. Just recently San Antonio, Houston, OKC and Philadelphia successfully tanked and drafted their cornerstone, while. Boston did the same by acquiring the top-5 picks via trade. Even Minnesota tanked long enough to finally build their contender around KAT and Ant.

Of course, there are teams that keep tanking and getting nothing but these are usually badly run teams like the Hornets, Wizards or Detroit. Remember, all other alternatives (trades, free agents, drafting with lower picks) are statistically much, much worse for everyone not named the Lakers or the Heat, or not having an insanely rich and generous owner like Ballmer.

I mean, you can always use the alternative strategies and fairly quickly build a first-round exit team, as the Jazz did with the Mitchell-Gobert core. If that's your goal then it's fine: no need for these useless, unreliable top 5 picks.

Now you’re putting words into my mouth. I didn’t say tanking and trying to get as high picks as possible is useless. Not at all. I want us to tank with Lauri for next year’s draft. I was just pointing out what was lacking in your analysis/calculations.

Yeah I was thinking like the Brooklyn picks that were owed are golden ones. Atlanta and Lakers are good ones. It will depend on how they are viewed by the other. I don't think the Hawks would do the Lakers pick no protections for Walker which is why I settled on the Kings pick which is still solid... and they can eat the JC deal.

Side benefit is if it helps Atlanta win a few more games it can screw SA just a little.

Then the Jazz should extend Lauri first, before "trading others". Because there is a non-zero chance that Lauri simply will not sign an extension with a stripped-to-the-studs team.

Not really. Lauri wanted to be in the playoffs and was told that the team would try to do it. But Danny obviously had different goals...

Couldn't you say that about a lot of teams though? One Giannis injury and the bucks pick looks good. One jokic injury and the nuggets pick looks good. Etc.

I tend to agree. NOP and ATL are logical Kessler situations. Those are situations where they want to win more than us, have a bigger role for him, and value the salary situation more. Feels like something should get done one way or another.

Sexton is a difficult fit....and I think there is big "egg on your face" potential here. I don't think he's Brunson, but if we actually let him loose I think he might be as good as Fox. Part of me thinks we should just try to capitalize on that potential ourselves, but I understand the urgency to tank immediately for this draft. If we get a solid two pick offer I think I would be comfortable with it. LAL is a possibility here, I like the idea of taking DLO (then buyout) and we can also take on some of their unwanted salary. They could also be a potential Collins destination. LAC and PHI could find themselves wanting a little extra juice and wanting Sexton...I think both teams have ways of getting a salary match.

One team I'd look out for is CHO. I think everyone assumes they are a tank team, but I don't think they are. With Lamelo they could easily be a play in team. They just re-upped Bridges and acquire Josh Green which are two guys on the same timeline as Sexton. Lamelo could be seen as a reasonable fit with Sexton. Unlike the Jazz, they could actually push for a playoff spot because the competition is *** in the East.

I always scoff at the idea of following the "OKC model " or whatever when in comes to rebuilding because each situation is so unique...blah blah blah. But I will say, they did set the blueprint on how to tank with a star player on your team. It's got to be so young/bad it's clear as day what the point of the season it is. I think this tease of being in the playoff race only to quit half way through is infinitely more offensive than just tanking outright. Look at the MP leaders on the 21-22 Thunder. You need the minutes distribution to look something like that and unfortunately that means Sexton and Kessler probably got to go.
