The only team besides the Jazz that might be able to get him a max extension are the Pistons. Which now that I think about it... why aren't they in the conversation? That NY has problematic protections, but what about *drum roll* super swaps? If I can get super swaps from the Pistons, holy ****. Their '29-'31 picks are also totally unencumbered.
They seemed intent on using their cap space to get assets.

More real money is owed to JC than Capela. That breathing room doesn't matter more than having JC on the books an additional year. If we send JC as part of this deal, they are undoubtedly doing us a favor, both sides know that, and that is part of the value coming back to UTA. I'm not saying ATL does not do this deal, just that JC is a tax like you said and not a small one either.
Total money diff from Clint to JC is $6M. They won't have space next year so JC's deal next year is whatevs. He has some value maybe its closer to 5-6M than 14M per year and if you factor in that Walker makes $5M next year and an equivalent center would make 12-15M on the market... like I think its all kind of factored in and its a good deal for them. I think you put way too much weight on his bad year. He's negative but not by a crazy amount.

I think the only team that would be desperate enough to give us what we're asking for when with the risk that Lauri leaves as a free agent next year is GSW.

It’s a huge risk for these teams. There’s always a chance at a good handshake deal, but that’s a lot of time to wait on that handshake. No matter how honest Lauri may be, it would make me queasy.

Doesn't the 2nd apron limit the number if years out you can trade a pick, even more than normal?
Its not frozen yet... that will start later.

Pistons can R&E him, though... so I'm gonna put on my biggest take-making hat and say that they are a dark-horse since they also seem desperate to improve and desperately need shooting.

Still a risk. If things go bad he can change his mind.
Risk for both parties is high. Lauri tears his achilles and that handshake deal changes.

If GS comes with all the picks and swaps, podz, and Moody a deal will happen. Otherwise I think we extend him. SA would likely be more interested midseason if he was extended.

You brought up the real money aspect, just saying that JC is more real money. And you may think having JC’s salary is whatevs, additional breathing room under the tax this year is also extremely whatevs. The Hawks don’t have money issues we’re solving in this hypothetical and it’s always better to have a cleaner cap.

I don’t really care to have a long discussion about just how negative he is. All I’ll say is that he’s going into his age 32 season, was one of the worst players in the league last year, and is an undesirable archetype. Of course he’s negative, and if we throw him into a deal when it’s not necessary we should count that as a big plus for us.
