Doner kebabs in Utah?

After being endorsed on this thread I visited Spitz yesterday. Went for lunch, the line was so long it was out of the door. Waited for 5 mins without any movement and said "**** it", I am not waiting half an hour just to be able to order a doner and then wait another 15 mins to be done. Came in the evening and the place had much less trafic. So, really it is not an ethnic place. Its a fusion-doner. They serve high end beer plus whiskeys, plus coctails and has an ultra-modern interior. Thats fine with me. I ordered their most popular doner, the "Street doner" on a thin pita, made of lamb/beef with regular french fries. The thing is good, but its definetely not your ordinary turkish doner. The meat of mine tasted exactly like Gyro. It looked the same too. And anyone who knows doners, would know that it is NOT gyro... This said, it was really good, will definetely go there again. The fries were amazing, the aeoli or whatever high end garlic fry sauce they have was very very good.

I didn't know shawarma and doner are the same thing. If you want good shawarmas in SLC, try O'Falafel's beef shawarma. Its really good and very close to what i've had in Israel. The owner is from Egypt, so you get the Egyption version... Mazza of course until Ali jacked up the prices. Haven't been there in years. Back in the country I come from the best doners were made by Syrians. Chicken and beef... I drool just thinking about them. The ones I've had in Germany were also amazing, as everyone on this thread that has had them confirms...

One of the best Doners and generally middle easter food i've had here in the states has been Amir's Falafel in LA. In a strip mall, obscure, it has the best doners I've had on this side of the pond....

I truly despise it every time this thread is bumped. Makes me crave Döners sooooooo bad ughhhhh

Thanks to both of the last two posters! Jazzmanian devil's suggestions in particular seem helpful and I'll definitely try out some of those restaurants next time I'm in SLC (I live in Utah County).

oflafel is amazingly good. There used to be this place in Kearns that had a bunch of authentic greek food. It was on 5400 south and like 3900 west. Maybe fishonjazz would know if it is still there. Big fat greek food or something was the name?

We need to make friends with Kanter and see if he can get a buddy to bring some real stuff over for the Jazzfanz nitez outez, that is assuming not everyone from Turkey hates him because he stiffed their National team.

You guys have a lot of door knocks and roofs in here. If you trust on Kanter, it might take a few years to come here though. Not because Turks hate him, but he seems to avoid staying too much.

Sigh, being unrealistically hungry and coming back to this thread is pure torturing.

"I hope you don't use those whips over there on the wall!"

BTW someone mentioned Atlantic Market on Main Street. I used to go there at least twice a month for dinner. This place used to be very good while it was owned by his original owner Miro from Croatia. All euro NBA players used to hang out there and eat. It was a regular sight to see AK, Memo, Giricek sitting at the counter eating one of their signature kabob plates. Since a new owner bought it the place has gone down the hill. He jacked up the prices and the quality and quantity of the food went down. I wouldn't recommend but if you end up there, try the plescavica. They have it on the menu as "Euro Burger". Its a giant burger but leaner and much better seasoned than it's american cousin. Better all around IMO....
