Oh, and this might depend on the place, but my favorite doner kebab shop in Germany served ones that were easily 50% larger than the typical gyro size.
This is true. There were some places, as I pointed out about Coburg, that had guys with carts they would wheel around, like bratwurst stands. And typically the street doner were larger than your typical gyro. And most I had were on split flatbread, not rolled or put on a flat pita then folded like a taco. They would cut the flatbread into quarters and split each quarter open from the point end, stuff it full of goodness, and sometimes fold the point ends over the whole thing and secure with a toothpick or similar.
