Donovan's D so far has been Deplorable

He doesn't rotate on defense and is sagging too much. Let Rudy take care of the paint and guard your man in your area on the rotation. As a result there have been a lot of wide open three's like Dort whom Donovan was often matched up with. At least he got the best of Dort when it counted. He's okay when his man has the ball and could be better, but he really needs to do something about his intensity on defense when his man does not have the ball.

He never was great at defense... Just average at best.

He really hasn’t made much development in his game over the years. He has become a more efficient scorer, but the rest of his game has not expanded. His defense has continually gotten worse. If he could give the Jazz anything besides volume scoring that would be huge, but he doesn’t seem interested. Rebounding, on ball defense, creating turnovers etc...he’s more than capable, but he gives no effort.

Having two players who can only provide scoring, even if they’re good scorers, is a tough way to compete for a title. For the Jazz to get better, Mitchell must become a more complete basketball player on both ends.

It must be said, he’s almost always at a size disadvantage every night. That doesn’t help. But his entire defensive role is also to guard the worst player, usually a 3&D guy, and do nothing else.

Mitchell was one of the best defensive players in all of college basketball and a great rebounder. Now he’s basically just a guy that you hope doesn’t fall asleep and make critical errors.

It’s a damn shame. He looked terrific defensively with team USA, but with the Jazz his only role is to score. And score in the most difficult ways possible too.

Some of you guys make me question if you know anything about basketball.

Despite getting the main focus of opposing defenses, Don has a steady improvement the first three years of his career in:
Points Per Game
Rebounds Per Game
Assists Per Game
3pt%
FT%

I agree that his defense needs more attention. He is an average defender, but its not like he's a guy we do our best to hide. But he does have to improve.

The narrative that he's just a volume scorer is so ignorant. Our coaching staff is finally JUST NOW making him the main facilitator. He had to do it on the fly in the playoffs. As for assist numbers, they should fly off the charts before long. I expect a 6 assists+ per game this year despite Joe, Conley and others running offense.

The negativity around here is suffocating.

Donovan is what he is. I dont expect any magical leap that takes him into being a top 10 player.

He's a volume scorer with great leadership ability. He's going to be clutch because he really wants to be that guy. He's shooting will come and go, but when he's on he is really on. I think we've seen some small strides in FT drawing and playmaking.

His defense is always going to suck. He's going to talk the talk, but he's rarely going to walk the walk. Publicly he's going to take blame for being bad on D, but behind the scenes I think he doesnt really consider it his job. I'm still shocked by how bad he is on this end. I get that he isnt going to expend a ton of energy on the defensive end for obvious reasons, but he combines that with relatively low IQ on D as well.

I don’t know for sure because we haven’t seen a Trey Burke tweet but I’ll bet his D is pretty good.

Thought DM was solid in the Portland game. Has gone downhill last two and cratered in the OKC game. The ball watching while his guy slips in for the offensive rebounds is the one that probably drives me the most crazy.

And all that said... if his offense was up to his normal averages we would be 3-0 with a healthy margin of victory.
