The Jazz are trying to become an elite team. It's a different process than signing players like Al Jefferson, Demarre Carroll, Kyle Korver, Marvin Willams, etc. and being in the mix for the #8 seed like Atlanta/Charlotte.

Hayward was a good pick. He's not the defensive player that Paul George is, but he's unique and a bit Manu-like in his ability to create plays from the wing. In the bigger picture, he is a valuable player and the market set his price. He looks like a piece of a contending team.

The haul that the Jazz got by selling high on Deron Williams has paid some serious dividends. Favors can be a starter on a contending team. Kanter looks confused in his new role, but he has enough positives that he can be an impact player. On some nights, he's our most consistent scorer.

Burks was a decent pick at #12. He still looks like a 6th-man to me, simply due to his inability to do what he does with other starters on the floor. Yes, Kawhi Leonard looks good right now, but anyone playing in Popovich's system complementing Parker and Duncan is going to look pretty good. See "Diaw, Boris."

The Burke pick gave the Jazz youth and what they thought would be starter-level talent at every position 1 - 5, making it easier to focus on BPA during their true tank draft this past year. They had no way of knowing who Exum would be as a player or that he would be available to the Jazz. Burke is a limited player on both sides of the ball. Maybe we trade him. Maybe we write him off. Who knows? Lots of people were calling Burke a top-5 or 6 prospect in the 2013 draft, including Chad Ford and David Thorpe. Starting the draft at #14 and moving up to #9 to get him was considered a real coup by most draft experts. He may yet turn out to be a serviceable player, and if so, he's still at least a trade chip.

I agree with Hack that Exum, Hayward, Favors and Gobert look like keepers. Add an alpha-dog to that group and we have a potential mismatch in our favor at any and every position. Exum looks to be gaining ability and confidence by the hour.

Still think the Hayward contract offer will bite us.

Let's say Hayward proves he is worth 15-6/year. (That number may be higher in a few years).

The biggest risk is Hayward can now opt out and be a FA in only 3 years (this being year 1).

I have a feeling he will go to a contender ahead of staying where you never make the playoffs......

So how does that bite us?
Oh, I guess because without Hayward we're a 15 win team this year and get a top-3 pick...to replace Hayward. This was the old model of the Clippers and the reason they stayed in the lottery seemingly forever. At some point, a team has to try to keep their players. Jazz have done that with Gordon, Derrick and Alec. Sure there's a risk of players leaving. But what is the alternative? Trade everyone once they get to Year #4 of their contracts?

Our starting 5 is currently outscoring the opponents by 3.1 points per 100 possessions in 178 minutes...

...but those players aren't "complementary".

Before this season they only played together for 123 minutes in one whole season.

We have a completely new system, with young players, that haven't played much together before and are doing reasonably good sofar into the season but they are not "complementary".

kudos for using the word "complementary" correctly. 9 out of 10 people would've said "complimentary".

My approach to this team and it's current make up is to be slow and reasonable. We have a new coach, a new system, new players and old players in new roles. We have changed a team, a franchise, really, that has done the same thing year in, year out since 1988. As many folks stated at the beginning of the year, this is the first year in the rest of the franchise's history.

We've probably hit more often than missed, compared to the other 29 teams.

In the last 5 drafts? 10 drafts, 15 ?? I know that it has to be difficult predicting the next star based off of what draft pic you have, but the Jazz are known for raising some eye brows when it comes to draft day.
I think the only fair way to judge this, is by GM at the time and draft pic #. We have clearly been doing something wrong since the early 90's.
