Favors agent says only way he stays long-term is if Hayward leaves

Yes, the best thing to hope for is he regains his health. And I'll wish him the best as long as he is here, just as with any Jazz player. He's been a complete pro -- one of my favorite guys.

I think all is his agent is saying today is that as things look now, it's easiest to see a path for Favors to stay long-term if Hayward's salary increase isn't on the books. Totally true as things look now, but you never know how things can change before the Jazz (have to) make a decision.

But don't know why he's talking contracts now in the press. Not sure it helps anyone.

I would love to trade Favors at the draft if the team can get a good return. I have nothing but love for him, but he has been injured, and the money will not work with a healthy Favors. It is so obvious that he's not coming back, so why not get something for him if possible?

That being said, it might be worth it to see if he can play himself back to a point where a team gives up a first rounder for him for a playoff run or something. DL needs to read the market and make the best move instead of letting him leave for nothing.

It's a completely honest comment. I wouldn't call it stupid. Everyone knows if Favors plays to his potential the Jazz cant afford him if we keep Hayward.

It sounds like he was asked and was responding to a question in a fairly benign yet honest way but the way it gets out in print may give the impression he's calling up people in the media and sounding off. Of course you could say he's an agent and should know this but his statement is being blown out of proportion, in similar fashion to a lot of the promoted responses some of our players gave at their exit interviews.

Unless the Jazz are completely idiotic and naive, I doubt his words ruffled anyone's feathers. Pretty sure the people in the Jazz FO have big boy pants.

Only reasons I can think of for agent to be talking now:

1) Agent/Favors don't think he'll get a fair shake with the Jazz even if healthy, thereby driving down his FA market. I don't really buy this, but I acknowledge it is a suspicion that's out there among some.

2) Agent's has a trade lined up that the Jazz aren't going for and agent is trying to put pressure on the Jazz. But seems unlikely at this juncture of the off-season.

Otherwise, Favors helps his cause as much through contributions to an excellent team as through perhaps better numbers on a poor team. I don't imagine Favors's agent just wants any possible trade.

But maybe there's other possibilities?

I have no issue with the content of the response. But agents don't need to respond to press questions, so the situation is different than player exit interviews. When an agent talks to the press, there's usually a purpose behind it.

Good point. And if DL is really trying to trade Favors now (who knows?) maybe there's a wink and a nod from DL at this as well.

But on the other hand, it tells prospective trade partners that Favors will be going for a high salary if his next season turns out well. So does maybe it doesn't grease the gears for a trade.

Or maybe it makes them more likely to give something better. If he's healthy and is open to re-signing with a specific team (even if it is an under the table thing) that could greatly increase his value in a trade.

I don't see Favors being a member of the Jazz beyond his current deal. If Favors were a free agent, he'd have no interest in us, and we'd have no interest in him. It's not a fit. He doesn't want to be a backup C, and we're not going to pay him a boatload of money to be one.

We have him injured an entire year where he's in and out of the lineup, only comes off the bench 11/50 games due to being reintegrated into the lineup multiple times, returns from sitting out the last month of the season to play 3 of the last four games when the rotation has tightened up and he's naturally not going to jump in to 30 mpg starting at the four, then rolls in to the playoffs and starts 2 games (three in reality) in Gobert's absence but comes off the bench the rest of the playoffs.

Somehow, ignoring the huge asterisk explanation above, ignoring him starting at the 4 for the past two and a half years next to Gobert, and starting for us the past 4 years, we don't bother to take a look at why he didn't start in the playoffs and why our limited sample size of Gobert and Favors not playing together for the past two months somehow overshadows the fact that both these guys started along side each other for the past two and a half years and were successful.
