Following potential 2014 draftees

I know things will probably change, but right now it seems like a clear dropoff is forming after pick four. If it stays this way I would almost rather have the fifth pick than the fourth. The team picking fourth will have very little choice whom they draft--they'll just take whichever player falls--whereas the team picking fifth will have their choice among five or six guys without sacrificing too much value.

Don't get me wrong... Wiggins, Parker, Embiid, and Exum are my four favorite players in the draft, but it wouldn't surprise me if the player picked fifth has a better career than the top tier player picked right before him. For a player to succeed his team must be fully committed to him, and sometimes that doesn't happen in cases where his perceived value forces a team's hand.

Recent examples include Michael Beasley, Evan Turner, and Derrick Williams. These guys were all the second best player in supposed 'two-player drafts'. The teams that drafted them didn't really have a choice. I'm trying to think of other examples farther down in the draft. If I remember right wasn't there another pretty clear dropoff after pick eight in the 2010 draft? The Clippers pretty much had to take Aminu, and nobody knew what the Jazz were going to do with the ninth pick. Utah and Indiana had their pick of the remaining field, so maybe it's no surprise that Hayward and George have gone onto have better careers than some of the guys picked ahead of them.

Not saying I wouldn't prefer to move up or stay at fourth, but if we drop to fifth I'm going to try to see it as a blessing in disguise (after breaking a few things, of course).

I have never seen saric before but doesnt randle also have better size?

Not really. Fairly comparable size actually…I just think Saric has much better skills.

All Randle can do is score (kind of) and rebound.

Saric can score, rebound, pass/create, and while his defense isn't exactly strong, it is most certainly better than Randle's.

Strangest comment I've seen in a long time. If you get the fourth pick and don't want Exum, trade down and get the guy you want. Also possible the Embiid and/ or Exum fall from top 4. (Embiid's back, Exum's downside). The consensus does not necessarily line up with the front office (Remember where last year's consensus number one Noel was drafted?

If you think all Randle can do is rebound and score in the post, I challenge you to watch this video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PqhuK___3PA#t=33

- 0.10min: Randle right elbow, drive, spun in the lane, passed out to a 3pt shooter

- 0.24min: Randle with 3pt shot top of the key

- 0.30min: Randle up top of the 3pt line, drive to the paint - kicked it out to 3pt shooter for an open corner 3pt

- 0.55min: Handling the ball top of the key, drove into the lane, basket and foul

- 1.05min: Inside scoring

- 1.40min: Randle top of the 3pt line, open 18 footer - good.

- 2.05min: Inside scoring

- 2.24min: Running the floor, receives pass and finish strong

- 2.45min: Again, handling the ball in open floor, quick pass to a shooter

And this is just off of a combined UK highlights of 1 random game. I simply don't have time to review a whole game, but hope you guys got the gist of it. Randle can handle the ball, can drive, can pass and make plays.

At least you picked a game against a terrible team that they beat by 34. Just saying.

He's just saying it sucks to be forced into taking someone because of popular opinion. But yes, I agree with you.

You missed my point. I like Exum a lot. The only thing I was trying to say is that if the division is strong enough, at fifth pick you have options and at fourth pick you have the leftover.

I know it is technically possible to trade down, but it requires the team at fifth to work with you and to also like the player who is left over. If it were simple it would happen more often.

Last year's draft was weird. Nobody knew what the Cavs were going to do and the consensus tiers were not nearly as defined. Even so it only further proves my point. The Cavs GM was fired for straying too much from the established order. He did it three times in a row with Thompson, Waiters, and Bennett, got criticized for it every year, and then got canned when none of the picks vindicated him. All the more reason for the team that picks fourth to just go with the obvious pick.

And I qualified my statement with 'almost' because given the choice I would still take fourth over fifth. I like all four of the top-tier guys and would happily roll with whichever one drops.

I still have Saric at bottom of lottery. Contrarian.

Depends, if he does not commit to coming over he will probably be drafted late lottery by a team with mulitple picks, but if he did commit to coming over he will be top 10.
