Following potential 2015 draftees

I guess I don't know enough of the cap picture off-hand, but it seems like with the cap exploding in a couple of years and with the raises that Hood and Exum MIGHT get in three years, the Jazz have one chance to add a significant free agent and it's now. But again, I'm shooting from the hip.

I see the jazz taking the best stretch 4 they can get.
In the draft, or free agency?

Outside of Porzingis (who I like a lot) and Kaminsky (who I like as a stretch 5), I'm not really enamored with any of them from the draft. Maybe Portis, but I see him as a clear step down in tiers from the guys the Jazz should be targeting.

I'd much rather see them go after a guy like that in free agency or at the trade deadline.

I think we all agree that these are the needs of this team (in no specific order)

- pg play
- back up center
- stretch big
- depth
- defense
- 3 and d
- scoring
- shooting

now some of those can be had in more then one player.

- pg play is not going to be solved with another rookie so I see this being solved later with a vet in free agency or a trade with Burke being used. some of this will be solved with development of exum.

- back up center the jazz have pleiss that seems to want to come over and I am pretty sure the jazz will know for certain if he is coming over. this can also easily be filled in free agency this offseason.

- stretch big is a hard position to fill. this draft seems to have a few in our range. I hope booker becomes this because I love booker but it is best to hedge your bets.

- depth is always need and the draft is a good way to do that.

- defense jazz are quickly becoming the best in the league and is always good to add more

- every team needs a 3 and d player. there are some gems in this draft.

- scoring defense wins championships but offense gets you to the game. jazz need an alpha scorer in a bad way. they would have to move up to get one.

- ideally scoring and shooting go hand in hand but there are a lot of specialists in the league. there are a few in this draft.

If Utah takes off next year and makes an impact in the playoffs, we still might be able to lure a decent FA who wants to join a winner. Otherwise, everybody is going to have money after this offseason, so that's usually not good for us. Unfortunately, I don't see a lot of options for us this offseason, and we won't really have that much cap space anyway without renouncing guys like Booker. I'm kind of hoping to make a trade in which we take back more than we send out, but it's also possible our best option could end up being us collecting an asset by selling our cap space. Whatever we do, I believe it's wise to assume our FA options will be limited for a few years after this offseason.

Like Raja Bell when we had a really good team with D-Will?

He said they don't want to build a board that early, before they've started the final discussions with each other and before they get all the information for the prospects(i.e. all the tape, all the interviews, individual work outs, etc.), because they don't want to fall victims to certain cognitive biases (like confirmation bias, recency bias(said they are watching video not in chronological order to avoid that one too), etc.) in constructing their big board. That's actually a really smart move and should be taken as a huge positive, rather than as a sign of neglect or lack of seriousness in the draft process.

I love that someone thought this was a lazy thing... We'll make a draft board the night before the draft cuz right now we just out partying.

DL is a hard worker. If you have a draft board too early it anchors you to those rankings. I work in a job and I do it all the time... I suggest a number and if they think its fair they take it... If it's too high they come off the number just a bit... Too low they come up a hair. Once they've taken in the data they'll make a draft board.

No, not like that. Someone who doesn't suck. Also, Utah was a good team with Deron, but we were never elite. Right now, Utah is on the verge of becoming an elite NBA team. Watch what happens with our road record this year. Obviously it all depends on the individual and how much they value winning over things like weather, big stage, etc., but I definitely believe Utah has a great chance of jumping far enough next year that we may be able to attract a player that we would normally assume was off limits. Gotta believe, baby.

I think we're all a bit anchored in the current player rankings. Of course it's an influence on who appears more valuable than others, but every year great players are had all over the draft board -- Rudy was 27th! The Jazz traded up to get Trey and NOW we all see they woulda been better off staying put and grabbing Greek Freak. So I'm not totally enamored with the idea of moving up. And this draft is deep.

But if DL decides there's a player worth moving up for then I'm good with that. It's nice to finally trust the FO. I didn't used to so much.
