Free Alec Burks

guys what do you guys think about alec burks being held back due to racialist issues?
im not saying someone in the jazz braintrust has incentive to push the caucasian hayward instead of burks due to the unique utah fan base.
but im not saying someone does not, either. what do you guys think?

Bottom line is that he should be getting SOME minutes EVERY game.

I know you just want someone to bite on this idiocy, so I'll oblige. This is the dumbest one theory I've ever heard. Especially when Randy Foye, a black guys, is getting his minutes and the head coach, the guy who puts the players on the court, is also a black guy.

does that change the present situation? We drafted Burks with the intention of using him and then better options fell in our laps.

If the better option is a journeyman FA who signed a one year $2.5 million contract then the Burks is a massive bust and the Jazz whiffed big time on the pick.

I refuse to believe that.

Don't know, data set I'm using only shows sophmores who have played.

By my count 27. But I was a bit rushed.

So, given that so many sophmore are playing on teams with worse records, it's not really suprising they are getting more minutes.

No, I think you got that turned around, 27 out of 45 played for teams with better records.

I thought it would be like you said, lots of minutes for players on crappy teams, the numbers didn't show that, but I didn't keep track of the count. But through the wonders of the internet I was able to pull the same data again today and count. It looks like the NBA updated their stats, it now shows 48 sophomores having played this year.

Alec Burks ranks 35th in minutes per game and 33 in total minutes. Kanter is 25th and 20th.

Using just Burks total minutes, there are 15 players on teams with records worse than the Jazz who have played more minutes. That means 16 (32-15-Kanter) that are playing on teams with records better than or equal to the jazz.

It is also interesting to see that most of the players that are close to Alec in minutes played were late first rounders. The closest lottery pick is Jimmer, who still gets more minutes than Alec.

take a look here

Very disappointing that we use a 12th overall pick on a player with such a high ceiling, and he is getting benched game after game for a vet we signed on a one year contract. I hope there is a good reason for it, and that Burks is learning a lot. He said he wanted to start in the preseason...so much for that.

Leaving 18 playing on teams with worse records (and I think we all agree we've had a difficult opening schedule). Considering what Burks has shown and who Kanter has to play behind, I think the numbers are coming out about where they should be. Wasn't Kanter the youngest member of his draft class?

I disagree that Corbin has to gives minutes to Burks, or Kanter, based on draft position. That's a fan's take; fans love to see the new talent in action, so we can see what they are made of. However, I don't see anyone on that list ahead of Kanter whose competition is the equivalent of a Jefferson or a Millsap. Corbin needs to distribute minutes based on who will help him win. It's rough for the fans, but this is a business for Corbin, not a game.

I know TyCo is black, but he maybe getting orders from higher-ups. Utah has a certain reputation around the NBA. For having a certain type of crowd.
A crowd that management feels there are incentives from to push certain type of players (hayward?) over other certain types of players (burks?).

So are you saying Hayward deserves to be nailed to the end off the bench, like Burks?

Tinsley is the guy stealing minutes, not Hayward, not Foye.

Can't believe I'm biting on this. If what you are saying is true, then management would have (1) not hired a black coach, and (2) not assembled a team with 13 black players and 2 white players. Minnesota on the other hand....

So we're winning then, right?

I'm going to assume playing worse players won't help that either.

It won't. This is true. In fact, it will change very little. That's what makes this situation so funny -- the justification for playing time is based on the argument that it makes us competitive. Sure, other guys may be more polished, but whether it's veterans, young guys, or ven me on the floor, the impact (given our situation) I negligible.

There is just no excuse for Foye to be playing this much. He simply isn't good enough, and his defense kills most of the offense he gives us.

In almost 30 mins tonigh he gave us 5 points, and 1 dime. That simply isn't getting it done. If I were Corbin he'd be benched for tonight's Wizard game, and Burks would get his mins.
