What's new

Game Thread: Utah @ BYU, Sat. 9/21 8:15pm MT, ESPN2

Dude, this is where you lost me. Bronco has been running the show for 8 years! If the recruiting is flawed, that's on him. No way you can put that on his assistants. Maybe the MOST IMPORTANT job of a college HC is identifying the types of athletes that you can recruit, and filling your staff full of assistants that can maximize the talents of those athletes.

The fact that 8 years in, Bronco can't seem to figure that out is a huge red flag. I honestly believe one of these 2 statements has to be true: Either Bronco is horrible at matching recruits up with the type of systems he wants to run, or BYU simply can't recruit the players they used to.

Personally, I think it's Bronco. Call me an idiot if you like but I think the guy is a brilliant D-Coordinator who has no business being an HC. He's basically a Mormon Dave Wannstedt.

This.

I'm pretty sure Thriller was being sarcastic.

At least, that's the way I read it, FWIW.

I think you give him just a tiiiiiiny bit too much credit.

lefty was getting a little greenish towards the end there. I hope it was just an out of body experience for him. I'm trying real hard to give him the benefit of the doubt.

I appreciate it. Tell you what - you give me the benefit of the doubt for after the game, and I'll give you the benefit of the doubt for before the game. Because your posts before the game rivaled his.

lol at the BYU idiots getting on green for what he posted when you guys dished out much more than that before the game. You reap what you sow, and green has every right to say what he wants. In fact, he should be able to cram a big fat cow pie in your faces. In other words...eat ****.

FCC has a very, very valid point.

As far as the Bronco dilemma... That's a tough one. What are the chances of hiring a non-LDS coach? Serious question. Since they bring in non-LDS talent, if the individual is conservative and doesn't have any baggage, wouldn't that work?

I honestly don't know. If they have non member assistant coaches, why not a HC?

The chances of that are pretty much zero in the current BYU climate. At least, I assume it's similar to faculty hiring--and we've been told that basically the only way the administration will consider hiring a non LDS professor is if we can document that there are no qualified LDS candidates. And while there might not be any A+ rated LDS head coaching candidates, I'm sure there are SOME qualified LDS candidates.

I agree with most of this, especially the bit about recruiting being pretty much THE most important thing about being a head coach in college ball. Bronco is an extremely gifted D-Coordinator, and has done great in defensive recruiting... but the offensive recruiting has been mediocre at best in recent years.

Lol.

I didn't get the controversy that I had hoped.

Truly, I think Bronco is a much better D coordinator than HC. BYU has a long history of blowing big games against big opponents. Boston college and Florida St all come to mind. OU lost because Bradford got injured and Texas lost because they refused to show up. I do think the entire coaching staff needs an overhaul. I don't like their recruiting and preparation in particular.... The entire university needs an overhaul. Just what the hell are they going for? 10+ years ago, it was to be a great football team. They had some tremendous talent. Then, that last year with Crowton happened. And in all honesty, it wasn't even THAT bad. Compared to what a lot of universities are being busted for. So they decided to clean it up. Ok...

Since independence, it doesn't really seem like the program has had much direction. Exposure? Isn't the best way to gain exposure to join a big time conference and compete well in it? What kid in Brazil or Mexico gives damn about watching this crap on low def?

So personally, I think it goes much higher up than Bronco. I don't think the AD of university officials know what the hell they want. I'm pretty sure the Athletic Department wants the Big 12 and to upgrade their recruiting. Meanwhile, others are calling the shots. It's basically making it a horrible time to be a BYU fan. Bad recruiting, sloppy coaching, and worthless season after worthless season.

Basketball used to be cool. But now we play in high school gyms and choke against St Mary's and Gonzaga.

The biggest problem IMO is that you have brethren involved in vital athletic decisions who have never participated in sports. To them, BYU TV and other missionary programs are the best missionary tools. In reality, the best missionary tool would be to join a big conference and kick butt in it. In Brazil, few cared about living prophets and free books/movies. We kept receiving new DVDs and books yet they rarely worked to gain anyone's attention. Brownies, maple syrup, cookies, and football? Yes , that worked. But free English classes with Americans? Americans making American desserts? Gringos talking about Brazilian soccer? Or throwing around an American football? Dude , worked like a charm.

People love sports baby. BYU and the LDS church would gain so much more attention with an awesome football team and BIG 12 conference than with a crappy team and BYU tv. That would elevate recruiting and give this school some much needed direction.

It was pretty bad. And some of those stellar characters from that group that got kicked out back then subsequently went on to get arrested for murder, aggravated assault, and burglary. That was a group of bad dudes.

I think Bronco's biggest problem is that he doesn't have connections in the coaching world that he can reach out and hire. Lavell Edwards had 20 friends that could've been good OCs.

Zero chance. They have some rule where the HC has to be an active LDS member, but they can hire non-LDS assistants and stuff. Not sure if they limit the number or anything, wouldn't be too surprised if they did and said no more than 3 or 4 or something.
