What's new

Gamethread: Jazz @ Suns. 8 PST

Including this year, Dante has been paid $25.93 million in his career. So over 5 years, he has made an average of $5.2 million. https://www.spotrac.com/nba/utah-jazz/dante-exum-15357/cash-earnings/

I'm disappointed in his injuries and his lack of development, but the amount of grief he gets is just ridiculous. For example, Thabo has made more than $5.2 million the last two years to provide less than what Exum has provided. Exum's contract has never kept us from other goals.

Like I have said in other threads; if Exum doesn't perform to his contract next season, dump on the guy. I will personally be much more critical of him next year when his contract can actually get in the way of team goals should he disappoint.
Nearly Every rookie gets a deal like the “averaged 5.2 million” thing. We made the choice to give him 30 million more than his rookie deal, and have committed to paying a dud nearly $50M. If he could stay healthy, maybe. If he could shoot, maybe. If he could even dribble, maybe.

Many of us though it was a big mistake to outbid ourselves and overpay an up-to-that-point terrible, injury riddled player. That’s why you’re going to see the level of resentment. Instead of bolstering the team, Dennis outbid himself and hurt the team.

Really surprised dl didnt pull the trigger on the exum conley deal.

What was the deal? Exum and a first?
No one knows.
I got the feeling it was Exum, rubio, and a first but some think there was another first involved and some think favors was part of the deal.

Also, he’s getting in the way of our goals right now. That salary/rotation spot should be filled by a good 6th man. Or someone who can score In a secondary role. Instead it’s taken by a guy who can’t shoot, can’t dribble, and can’t stay healthy. People are going to resent, until he somehow shuts us up by not playing like a dleaguer.

So you will bash him in the future if and when he sucks. Some of us are just choosing to do it while he is currently sucking. I don't see a big difference here. You are basically saying "guys, don't criticize Exum until I tell you it's ok to criticize exum, then go right ahead at that point". Kinda arrogant of you imo

Also, when I watch jazz games thabo is providing more than X. Like last night. iirc thabo leads the team in 3 point %. Also iirc thabo has a 15 year career of history of contributing to teams. Not contributing greatly or anything but better than X still.

And @fishonjazz I have been over this at length in the other thread but...

The first day of free agency last year, we picked up Thabo's $5 million option and we offered Favors $15+. So we were out of cap space at that point. Signing Exum was something we could do since we had his Bird Rights. If we wouldn't have signed Exum, we were still limited to the exact same exceptions. So why not re-sign a guy we still have faith he can use his great defense and athleticism to improve? Even after signing him, we were far under the luxury limit. Instead of using exceptions, we decided to pick up Udoh's option and sign Niang rather than go after more ambitious targets.

So my point being - his salary through 5 years hasn't gotten in the way of anything. We have had cap space numerous times in the last 5 years. We haven't really risked the luxury due to his contract in the last 5 years. So the argument over his salary keeping us from anything is completely bogus.

His roster spot could be debatable, but we had the opportunity to add other PG's last year and this year, and only added Naz and Stockton.

Look I don't really care. If a player is playing like **** then it's fine to talk about the player playing like ****. I don't give a **** about salaries or whatever. If a player is always hurt them it's ok to talk about how he is always hurt regardless of salary situation. No one has to wait until the date you decide on for it to be ok to discuss.

Thabo is an obviously better player than Exum. He’s also on his last legs as a player. Says a lot about Exum that someone is desperate to positively compare him to an old player coming off a significant knee injury and can’t even make the case.

I also enjoy the... if he sucks next year then trade his ***... what team will want him... his only value in a trade is based on mystery and intrigue. If you remove that and replace it with "yeah this guy definitely isn't good or definitely is injury prone" then he's $10M of dead salary and a wasted roster spot.

There is still a glimmer of hope, but the crowd that sits there and says he should be allowed to play through his garbage play and he'd be good if he could play a ton of minutes (like garbage) need to sit down. Now ain't the time for that. If he was okay or just kinda bad then fine... but he was really bad at one point in the game there and wasn't doing anything else mildly productive.

We are so much better when Neto plays the point right now... wanna talk about fair? That MFer always shows up ready to play and executes what is needed on the court... even though he doesn't have the physical attributes that might allow him to be awesome... that dude deserves to play when healthy. He doesn't play scared he plays ready. Dante didn't look focused or ready... had no problem with them yanking him.

What high horse? Don't do that. I never said anybody was above criticism. But for a game thread where we won the game gets overrun by bashing of a guy who played 10 minutes while coming back from a significant injury is pretty freaking stupid.

Criticize all you want, but if somebody else says Exum got in the way of other additions, they are flat out wrong.

Thabo is not a better player than Exum. Consistent? Sure. Healthier? No. Weed free? No.

Right now, they are equally terrible and irrelevant. Once Exum gets back to how he was playing in late December (or even close to that level), he is providing more than Thabo.

I'm not even an Exum homer which makes it crazy that I have to fend off the hate that some of you guys just have to unload on somebody.

Conley didn’t want to play in Utah. I don’t care what he said after his agent had let that out. He didn’t want to be here and it was a good choice not to force the issue, especially at the cost. I think now we have to use Exum where we can and maximize whatever value he has, realizing we made a mistake. It’s a sunk cost at this point, but maybe somewhere down the line his defense helps in a particular situation or gets back to attacking against teams that can be exploited there. Time to bite the bullet and try to make the best of it.

His "best play" during his 2-minute stint to start the 4th was when he brought the ball up and passed it a millisecond before tripping over someone's shoe lace and doing a faceplant. What made it his "best play" was that his miscue didn't screw up the possession.

I use to complain about the short leash Quin gave Exum, but last night we were in a tight game with the worst team in the NBA. Two more minutes of Exum and the tide would have completely turned in favor of the Suns.
