I'm okay with the big city organized shows, it's the yahoos out in the streets seeing if maybe they can start their neighborhood on fire. Those booms are right outside the window shaking my house. Starts a bit after 9pm and goes past 11pm almost non stop.
My cats are afraid of the fireworks, but, honestly, they're more afraid of the vacuum cleaner. I thought about giving them some gabapentin (one of my cats takes it for a neuro condition, so I have it around) but then decided they'd be fine. And, you know what? They hid under the beds until about 30 minutes after it was over and then were fine, so they know they're safe.
I was a bit worried about the large empty field at the end of my street, maybe 250 feet away from me, but the people somehow seem to be smart enough to stay away from it. That's probably what comes from having 1/3 of your state burn down every summer.

Gabapentin is a medication commonly prescribed by veterinarians for cats to help manage various conditions.
Uses:
- Pain Management: Gabapentin is often used to treat chronic pain, including nerve pain, in cats. It can also help manage the heightened sensitivity to pain that some cats with chronic conditions develop.
- Anxiety Reduction: Gabapentin can be beneficial for reducing anxiety in cats, especially in situations that cause stress, such as vet visits, travel, thunderstorms, or fireworks. Studies have shown that a pre-appointment dose can reduce stress-related behaviors during these times.
- Seizure Control: Gabapentin can also be used in conjunction with other medications to help control seizures in cats. It helps stabilize electrical activity in the brain to prevent seizures.
Yeah, I was surprised the first time we were given it, for another cat who was just insanely anxious going to the vet, like they literally couldn't examine her she was fighting so hard. It's generally a small dose, 50-100 mg, whereas I take 1,800/day for my leg, and my wife takes about 2 times that much. I actually just discussed it with my friend who is a vet tech (basically a nurse) so I had the dosage top-of-my-mind.Yeah dude I know what it is, I was considering asking my GP for a script for my back. I'm just surprised a medication that heavy is used on a domestic cat.
I have no idea how I will ever get my cat to a vet, it took two of us to get her in the cat box to relocate her from my flat to my parents house. If she ever really needs it my plan is to call the vet and ask them to come here. (Vet clinic is literally a 5 minute walk away.)
Gabapentin “heavy” for a cat but you’ve done Valium?Yeah dude I know what it is, I was considering asking my GP for a script for my back. I'm just surprised a medication that heavy is used on a domestic cat.

Yeah I take 1200 mg of gabapentin 3x per day for neuralgic pain, have done for a decade. I'm not surprised pets would get it too. I imagine it would help with anxiety in animals, I could see that. I know they prescribe basically Valium for animals, our vet offered that for our dogs for fireworks but we didn't take it. Instead we just sat with them during the fireworks and tried to help keep them calm. The vet recommended that over the drugs as the drugs didn't necessarily help that much unless it was enough to straight up put them to sleep.Yeah dude I know what it is, I was considering asking my GP for a script for my back. Speaking of pets, I bought a roast chicken tonight to give my cat a treat, (she loves roast chicken) anyway she's eaten most of the chicken (I had half for dinner) but she still wants more. She is presently eye ****ing me, with a look that says, I want more chicken ****.
Another Killjoy, the professionals have to learn somewhere, if kids can't blow up and burn down their neighbourhood, what's the point of being a kid? My cousin and I blew **** up all the time! My cousin used to make explosives in his mums bath, he got a bit nervous with some nitroglycerin he made one afternoon so we buried it in the paddock out the back. 7 or 8 years later they built a road through that paddock and the nitro nearly blew up a truck. We were very impressed with it. All sort of uniforms came out to investigate, there was a crater the size of a minivan. Sensational fun.
We made pipe bombs that set off car alarms and broke windows, it was all a healthy part of growing up. We're both well adjusted moderately successful adults these days, if I called him up tomorrow and said lets go blow something up, we'd take an ages to find a hole in our schedules to do it. We never consider the freedoms we lose with "success."
I find these professional shows a bit sterile, there's no danger, no pissed off neighbours, no hospital admissions. No fun.
