You obviously did not watch Payton drop 29 pts on Jazz last year. Payton is much better than Exum now. Exum still has potential to be better though.
Career PER 7 vs 15.4. Check stats per 36 minutes if you want. Payton blows Exum out of the water as of now.

How? Payton's career PER is over 15. Exum is currently at 7. Payton hasn't lost most of two seasons to injury. Payton's career win-shares are over 11, while Exum is still at just 1.

Hopefully Exum can salvage his career. So far his has been barely this side of a worst-case-scenario for such a high pick.

I do think there is a ton of over the top criticism of him. Love can turn to hate and I think that him being a top 5 pick and not progressing like some would hope has made one strong emotion turn into another. There's also a lot of pride on the line from what I can tell. Some people really put a lot of self-worth into their basketball evaluation skills.
