Like many who comment on the situation, I don't know Jake Heaps, but I have to wonder if he's as thin-skinned and afraid of competition as BYU fans are trying to make it sound now that he is leaving. Maybe, just maybe he was sick of being jerked around by a team and a coach that failed him in regards to building a competent, seasoned, offensive staff. An staff made up of Doman, Cahoon, and Dupaix is pretty green and probably not quite ready for prime time. I think it's no suprise that with so much offensive transition BYU struggled to begin the year. Those early season struggles will now forever be known as what started the wheels in motion for Jake Heaps to leave BYU.
When you have the biggest QB recruit in school history entering his 2nd season, is that the right time to turnover almost the entire offensive staff? Maybe even more importantly, why was there so much offensive turnover after a season that saw your true freshman QB start 10 games, get better as the season went on, and finish the year with an outstanding effort in a bowl win that left BYU fans salivating for what the future held?

Maybe he wants to compete so badly that he feels like he needs to find a coaching staff with more accomplished offensive minds in order to put him in the best position to succeed. Since Heaps arrived in Provo, I think Bronco's handling of the QB situation and the offensive hirings and firings have been very perplexing. He and his coaches are not without blame in this.

You really want to blame BYU for something, so go ahead and blame them for this. Might as well if it will get you to stop. ( I know it will not)
It was also Sloan's fault AK didn't play as well after his big contract because he didn't handle him right.
It was the NBA coaches faults Adam Morrison did not play well in the NBA because they mishandled him as well.
It was the Saints fault Reggie Bush isn't as good as he was going to be.
It's the Raiders fault Jamarcus Russell isn't awesome.
It's Jordan's fault Kwame Brown was not an all star.

...but maybe it's more on the player as to why they did not succeed. Maybe Heaps 5 ypa was a fluke because the rest of the team sucked? Oh wait, Riley Nelson who can't throw a lick averages 9 ypa. Heaps just needs to toughen up and focus on getting better. I hope he does so because this has nothing to do with a lack of physical skill. I like him, but I'm also realistic. Let's quit trying to blame other people for a person's problems. If Heaps was not not given a shot this year I could see blaming coaches, but 252 attempts is not exactly not getting a shot.

Look, it's not like I'm blaming only BYU for this. I realize Heaps has his fingerprints on this trainwreck too. I just don't think Bronco or his coaches should be completely absolved of any wrong doing. They botched this big time, and it's not like I'm just saying that without giving any reasoning as to why. I have given plenty of evidence to support my stance.
Let me just say this: As a self-avowed BYU hater, I LOVED it when Bronco ran Robert Anae out of the program. During Anae's tenure, BYU was tough to defend. The Anae era saw BYU have probably their best RB in school history (H. Unga) and the winningest QB in BYU history (Max Hall). Think about that, the winningest QB in BYU history. Even though I'm a hater, I have to sit back and marvel at that fact considering all of the QB's BYU has had.
I thought shoving Anae aside in a effort to keep Brandon Doman in the fold was a mistake from the second it happened, and I loved it. And for the record, 1 year later I think I'm still completely right.
Hans Olsen today reported that many of his sources confirmed Heaps' "holier than thou" attitude. He apparently didn't want to go through the same experiences as any others. I guess they go by seniority to get equipment, eat on the road, etc. Olsen says Heaps refused to do this and simply jumped to the front of the line. That would be hard for the rest of the team (all of which paid their dues and put up with this ****) to get behind someone like that.

I don't think anyone can really call Bronco and Co Chris Peterson or Urban Meyer.
Bronco leaves a lot to be desired. And I'm not a fan of BYU's offense. One of the funniest and irrational arguments by the pro-AK I mean pro-Jake crowd was that the offense was just too complex.... I had to laugh... If anything, the offense was too conservative and simple!
These folks that want to talk about the complexity of BYU's offense need to watch a game with Az. St, USC, Oregon, Boise, Northwestern, and so many other prolific passing offenses in NCAA. Even Utah's was more complex under Hays I thought....
From those of you who are far from the situation, it's obvious that you're going to blame Bronco. Kinda like those around the NBA blame Sloan for Duron leaving.
For those of us who are closer and know what kind of ME FIRST and ENTITLED attitude Heaps, the Chosen One, brought to the table, we all understand and are relieved to see him go. Does that mean we have to defend Bronco at all costs? Of course not. But the root of this problem has been and always will be, the Chosen One's attitude.
Those of you who still don't understand, consider this, both Jan Jorgensen and Hans Olsen have reported over the past few days about Jake's entitled attitude. Are they just full of bs? Or if there's smoke... There's probably fire?
Living just a few miles away from the football stadium and still having some friends on the team, trust me folks, Heaps leaving is a GOOD thing. The dude was a bad apple.
Once again I ask, why hasn't anyone come to his defense? Such a talented player, would have split the locker room in half with Riley starting. Instead, it unified the team. With his benching, the team should have taken a nosedive, instead of played better. With news of his transferring, you'd think that many would be rushing to his aid, yet no one has. Why?
Anyone remember when Melo was finally booted off the Nuggets to the Knicks? Weren't the Nuggets supposed to suck? Weren't the Knicks supposed to get better? Ooops. What happened? This Heaps thing is sorta like that.
Big time jerk, big time distraction, poor attitude, get him the hell away, and lets play as a TEAM.
BYU will survive without him. I doubt he'll survive without BYU...

You could be right on all counts. I've just been fascinated by just how quickly BYU fans have turned on Heaps so I'm more or less playing devils advocate. And Thriller, I don't include you in this following statement, but I think most Cougar fans are going out of their way to make Bronco/BYU look like the good guys in this. When I hear what guys like Jan and Hans have to say, I also take that with a grain of salt. I understand that it's probably the truth, but I also realize they are former BYU players who are still close to the program, so I wonder just how much of it is damage control. If Kyle Whittingham had just ran a 5 star QB out of the program, I doubt you'd hear Eric Weddle or Alex Smith on the radio tearing apart Whit and the University of Utah. Guys like that are always going to protect their own.
You sound pretty close to the program. I'm inclined to believe you, but I still think BYU has to shoulder some of the blame. Even if Heaps was the biggest ******* in the world during his time at BYU, there's still 3 questions that bother me and lead me to believe Bronco botched quite a bit of this:
#1- If Heaps didn't feel like he had to pay his dues like you've reported, why was that allowed to happen? Why was Heaps allowed to skip what all of the other players had to do? Why didn't Bronco get in his face and say: "This is the BYU way. Everybody else here had to do it, and you're going to as well."? I'm sorry, but if a guy gets away with acting like that, it's because he's being allowed to. It's just like a child pushing the boundries with their parents to see how much they can get away with. If the kids getting away with murder, who's fault is that?
#2- Everything seemed to be going extremely well as Heaps freshman year came to a close. Why all of a sudden was there a need for almost a complete overhaul of the offensive staff? I honestly feel like Bronco felt he was going to lose Doman to another program. I think it was the wrong move and I have a hunch that if Anae was still at BYU, Jake Heaps would be too.

#3-I find it interesting that Heaps supposedly had a god complex from day 1, but nobody was complaining about that as he grew more and more successful his freshman year. Hell, after the bowl game all of you guys were downright giddy and Bronco seemed the same way. Was he letting Heaps' god complex slide under the radar because the kid was performing well? Did he not see what everybody else on the team saw? Was he being willfully blind to what was going on?

For me it wasn't so fast. I saw how he played the freshman year and was cautiously optimistic. I had a list in my head of things he needed to work on by the next season, and slowly as the year progressed I didn't see any improvement. In fact it seemed like he got worse. I don't have any issues with any of your questions, and yes I do think there should be some blame to the coaching staff for the whole fiasco, but no more than 25%, the rest is on Heaps.
If the rumors are true about how he acted and things he did, it just may be a contributing factor into why he is transferring. For all we know the coaches were straight up with him and said he won't start unless he changes a few things, and he refused to change. Who really knows. There is plenty of blame to go around if you must try to spread it.

The coaches and players definitely shoulder the blame on this. If this is true, and I do think it's true, all it would have taken is for one person to call him out on it. That should have put a stop to it.
This shocked me as well. I also think Bronco was afraid of losing Doman and that spurred the house cleaning The jury is still out on this, IMO.
Winning covers up a lot. Again, blame cam go to the coaches for this. It all probably contributed to his God Complex.
