What's new

James Gunn

So if it's a sarcastic tweet, it's ok to be racist and not lose your job. Ok.
I don't really feel like rehashing the conversation about "punching up" vs "punching down" and the satirizing of social media abuse hurled at minorities, by switching the races of those involved, thanks.

You weren't a comedian. You were a bully that thought it was funny at one person's expense.

Kinda sad you'd compare the two.

Btw, why does it matter if they were mormon friends? Lol
I was Mormon as well if that wasn't clear, I know I wasn't a comedian, although we thought ourselves pretty funny at the time.

The point, which I thought was rather obvious, is that comedy routine influenced us to behave that way. It played into a culture of homophobia that we eagerly latched onto.

If that helps you sleep better.

Dude, I'll I'm saying is people make mistakes. Comedians say stupid things. I'm not saying there should be no consequences, but this online mob mentality of burning the witch is bs. Now, if the guy is a total pos then fire him, but come on, man... second chances. The past is the past. People learn. People make mistakes. People are ignorant and are judged by know it alls.

Firing and throwing people and jail is weak (I'm with John Legend.)

So, do you condemn every comedian that has said things that people find homophobic, racist, sexist, xenophobic, etc? If so, you may not like comedy.

I'm not sure what throwing people in jail has to do with this, but honestly he shouldn't get the SNL job if those routines, very recent ones mind you, are an example of what he thinks is funny. Rehashing old stale racial steotypes isn't just offensive, it's boring and lazy comedy to boot.

Throwing people in jail really doesn't have anything to do with it. It's just another rant. I'm sick of people thinking that people should go to jail and have the books thrown at them. I lumped my feelings with that with people being offended and demanding people being fired.

Getting a job or losing a job is a major life event. Losing a job can seriously **** them up. Firing someone from their actions from the past that is dug up (to a certain degree) is the easy way out. Why not make that person do something to show they've developed or educate them? Make the world a better place, dude. Don't throw an unpolished thing in the fire.

Bill Burr and Dave Chappelle just had Netflix specials with racial stereotypes...

They got paid millions.

They have a 99% rating by viewers.

You're a robotic, woke, idiot, regurgitating what you think should be said.

I think there's room for nuance in this discussion. Everyone goes through a process of learning, some sooner than later. I don't think we should "cancel" every comedian that has told an offensive joke. But that doesn't mean we can't hold them to some standard, especially those working today. It's really not hard to be funny without being offensive. There are plenty of good comedians working today who's sets are completely free of bigotry.

Fire him!

Punching up though, right?

When Burr's Elvis bit is available I'll post it too.

I'm so offended by comedy. Fire them!

Right, I'm the robot, for what? Daring to question the status quo?

You've actually highlighted one of the more ironic parts of this entire discussion. You and others are up in arms about how comedians are being victimized by so called "woke" people, and yet they seem to me to be doing just fine. If that's the worst cancel culture can do, sign me the **** up.

In other words, there are different comedian styles to fit people's senses of humor. Don't watch comedian who offend you. Simple.

Daniel Tosh has had a show on MTV for a decade. Why hasn't he been fired?

It's not ironic because this thread is full of examples of the double standard.

I'm not up in arms. I didn't get anyone fired. I haven't advocated for anyone to be fired. You've defended Jeong, Smollett, when they were complete POS and yet, are simple minded enough if someone is as simple as white, you agree they should be fired/etc because you're so woke and don't conform to the status quo.

Call me terrible (up in arms lol) if you will. The online mob, fake outrage, mob mentality can go **** off.
