Not surprising in the slightest, but still news I guess.

Jazz fully intend to bring Gordon Hayward back. It'll be interesting to see what the market is willing to offer him.

Cool.

I think he'd be a really good fit next to Wiggins, Gordon, and probably Parker too, FWIW.

I am hoping that by securing Hayward as a "restricted free agent" the Jazz are just attempting to protect their money invested in Hayward, in hopes for a sign and trade deal this off-season. I could be wrong but I think it's a little ironic that this happened 6 days before the free-agent dead line and the day before the NBA draft. Maybe they are hoping to offer Hayward as a trading piece to trade up??

This also allows them to shop him in order to trade up, right?

Not unless you have a 'sign and trade' type of deal where all the teams, player and agent all agree on it. You can't trade a free agent.

I'd prefer to sign him to about $10 mil a year, but I'm betting he's going to get closer to $12-14 mil. Blame that on the salary cap continuing to increase.

Thanks. Doesn't that move go only to assist the Jazz's hand to keep him for a sign and trade before he ships out to Boston?

Not really; a qualifying offer doesn't implicitly mean that we only want him for a year, but rather that we want to ensure a player is a restricted FA vs. unrestricted (which would occur in a week if we were to not extend a qualifying offer and then we wouldn't have the right to match any offer from another team). If a player agrees to the qualifying offer, they get a 125% increase on their last year of salary and will be an unrestricted FA next year.

The hope is that you retain him with your qualifying offer and negotiate a new, long-term contract that would kick in the following season.

Very well taught. Thanks.

I've been saying this all along. Hayward is exactly the kind of player that you want around your star. Only question is "At what price?"

Luckily for us, I think Hayward lowered his value a bit this season. He didn't make any real progressions from last season other than improved rebounding and passing with more exposure. He basically proved that he could not lead a team successfully and is best as a complimentary player. For that reason, I think it would be crazy if someone offered him close to a max offer. I'm thinking around 9-11 million which would be an easy match for the Jazz. It would be a shame to lose Hayward right after drafting Wiggins, Parker, or Gordon.

OK. We're staying put at #5. This seals it.

Really? Funny how we just see things differently. I think the Jazz have Burks pegged as their 6th man. Then Hayward can be a starting SF or SG depending on who they draft. I still think that the Jazz go for the first pick and then slot Hayward depending on who they draft between Wiggins and Parker.

Hoping ppl realize this literally means nothing about anything.

Great explanation, Avery.
Extending a QO is purely procedural. As Avery said if a QO is not extended, Hayward would become an Unrestricted Free Agent. Why would a player ever accept a QO? Well if he really HATED the Jazz and they were unwilling/unable to work out a sign and trade, then Hayward could sign the QO for one season and then be an UFA next summer. Players generally don't want to do that because they take a huge salary hit. In short, there's virtually no chance Hayward is back for 1 season at $4.7M. He'll either work out a deal with Utah or sign an offer sheet with another team that will probably be matched.

You are so out of touch! This means everything! It explains all we've wanted to know!

DL ordered lasagna yesterday at the annual pre-draft Olive Garden meal. Did you know that jabari probably eats Lasagna every day cuz he's fat? Jazz will draft Jabari, guaranteed.

He also ate 3 pieces of garlic bread. I'm thinking that means that he's working a deal involving Trey Burke and/or the #3 pick. Or perhaps he believes in a 3 pg rotation? 3 years for the jazz to win a Championship? I just know that it's gotta mean something.

He also ordered a strawberry Italian soda. Hayward's wife probably has used some strawberry lip gloss stuff sometime in her life. So my guess is, DL will either sign and trade Hayward, fail to match another team's offer, or match another team's offer. Ya feel me?

Agree.
Besides, Jazz have a history of bringing guys off the bench their rookie seasons. Trey was an exception due to having Twiddle Dee and Twiddle Dum as the other options.
Vonleh, Gordon, maybe even Wiggins have some developing to do before they're ready to go against starters. Even Parker might get 30 mins/per, but come in behind Kanter or Hayward (or both). Let these rookies dominate NBA backups before taking off the training wheels.

They have done and said the same about Matthews.

My brother worked with the jazz this past year and was pretty well connected to some folks who were actually involved in their decision making process. One thing that really stands out? The Jazz aren't nearly as creative or as diabolic as many on this board make them out to be. They aren't the CIA.

So these stupid trades involving half the league that this board usually creates and these weirdo conspiracies (like Hayward's qualifying offer) just have absolutely zero substance to them.

My guess? The Jazz knew months ago that they were going to send a qualifying offer out. However, draft stuff and coaching stuff was priority #1. By now, the jazz are basically set with their draft prep. So why not get to the next phase like, free agency? The first step in this free agency phase is to extend a QO to Hayward.

No conspiracy. No weird intentions with the timing. We aren't sending a message to the league that we're shopping Hayward.

We just had a few extra mins before the draft started and are now working to get going with free agency.
