Jazz extend qualifying offer to Hayward

OK. We're staying put at #5. This seals it.

Really? Funny how we just see things differently. I think the Jazz have Burks pegged as their 6th man. Then Hayward can be a starting SF or SG depending on who they draft. I still think that the Jazz go for the first pick and then slot Hayward depending on who they draft between Wiggins and Parker.

Hoping ppl realize this literally means nothing about anything.

Great explanation, Avery.
Extending a QO is purely procedural. As Avery said if a QO is not extended, Hayward would become an Unrestricted Free Agent. Why would a player ever accept a QO? Well if he really HATED the Jazz and they were unwilling/unable to work out a sign and trade, then Hayward could sign the QO for one season and then be an UFA next summer. Players generally don't want to do that because they take a huge salary hit. In short, there's virtually no chance Hayward is back for 1 season at $4.7M. He'll either work out a deal with Utah or sign an offer sheet with another team that will probably be matched.

You are so out of touch! This means everything! It explains all we've wanted to know!

DL ordered lasagna yesterday at the annual pre-draft Olive Garden meal. Did you know that jabari probably eats Lasagna every day cuz he's fat? Jazz will draft Jabari, guaranteed.

He also ate 3 pieces of garlic bread. I'm thinking that means that he's working a deal involving Trey Burke and/or the #3 pick. Or perhaps he believes in a 3 pg rotation? 3 years for the jazz to win a Championship? I just know that it's gotta mean something.

He also ordered a strawberry Italian soda. Hayward's wife probably has used some strawberry lip gloss stuff sometime in her life. So my guess is, DL will either sign and trade Hayward, fail to match another team's offer, or match another team's offer. Ya feel me?

Agree.
Besides, Jazz have a history of bringing guys off the bench their rookie seasons. Trey was an exception due to having Twiddle Dee and Twiddle Dum as the other options.
Vonleh, Gordon, maybe even Wiggins have some developing to do before they're ready to go against starters. Even Parker might get 30 mins/per, but come in behind Kanter or Hayward (or both). Let these rookies dominate NBA backups before taking off the training wheels.

Jazz fully intend to bring Gordon Hayward back. It'll be interesting to see what the market is willing to offer him.

They have done and said the same about Matthews.

My brother worked with the jazz this past year and was pretty well connected to some folks who were actually involved in their decision making process. One thing that really stands out? The Jazz aren't nearly as creative or as diabolic as many on this board make them out to be. They aren't the CIA.

So these stupid trades involving half the league that this board usually creates and these weirdo conspiracies (like Hayward's qualifying offer) just have absolutely zero substance to them.

My guess? The Jazz knew months ago that they were going to send a qualifying offer out. However, draft stuff and coaching stuff was priority #1. By now, the jazz are basically set with their draft prep. So why not get to the next phase like, free agency? The first step in this free agency phase is to extend a QO to Hayward.

No conspiracy. No weird intentions with the timing. We aren't sending a message to the league that we're shopping Hayward.

We just had a few extra mins before the draft started and are now working to get going with free agency.

There is one HUGE difference. No matter what Hayward is offered, it will not put the Jazz into the luxury tax. In fact, it won't even get them to the salary cap floor. Matthews' deal caught them completely off-guard and shocked EVERYONE in the business except those in Portland. It was an unprecedented offer. In his second season he was making over $2M more than the player drafted #1. Utah would have been on the hook for over $9M had they matched that offer. Hindsight is great, isn't it?

As for the QO, there is a deadline set by the NBA. I believe the deadline is June 30th. So the Jazz took care of some paperwork in advance of the draft. As Thriller mentioned, there were other priorities, including player workouts and setting up their draft board. BTW, Sacramento extended a QO to Thomas yesterday. I'm sure there will be several others extended in the next 4 days. And we'll go through the same process with Kanter and Burks next season if they're still on the team. I don't see either reaching an agreement this summer with Utah like Favors did. Both Enes and Alec should be able to increase their value substantially with increased playing time.

Teams almost always offer the Qualifying Offer on decent players. BTW.

Yes, even if a player has not entirely lived up to his draft position, the QO is generally extended. It's cheap. How bad would Hayward have had to play to not be worth at LEAST $4.7M?
Now, Philly had NO intention of keeping Turner, so they traded him for a 2nd. Detroit will certainly extend a QO to Monroe. I also believe Phoenix needs to submit a QO for Bledsoe. Houston made Parsons a FA so they could better fit a new contract under their cap/tax. It's a risky move that requires a lot of trust between the player and organization. The Cavs tried that trick with Boozer and we all know how that turned out!

Its honestly embarrassing that this even has to be explained. I'm surprised 95% of this board can actually read.
