Locke was hyping Marcus Smart and Aaron Gordon when we picked Dante Exum, but it was safe for him to do so. Either Smart or Gordon were assured to be on the board at #5.
Locke was hyping Trey Lyles, but there was almost no way Lyles was going to go higher than #12 in that draft, so it was safe to do so.
Locke was hyping Dejounte Murray and Wade Baldwin in 2016. Again, both those guys were safely going to be on the board for the Jazz.
Locke would have hyped JRob and Kevin Huerter more than he did, but it was too risky since they might not be there for the Jazz.

Locke's job is to manage expectations. He's not going to pine for a player like Miles Bridges if he's not sure the guy will be on the board. The other guy Locke hyped this year was Mo Wagner, again someone slightly below our range.

He hypes a lot of people... he talks for month or two about the draft. There is no way he doesn't llike more than one player, but his favorites are VERY easy to discern. Lyles, Bradley and Allen were sooooooo obvious.
 
To be fair, just because we took Allen doesn’t mean it was destined to be so. It doesn’t mean that he was our first target. It doesn’t mean that the “smokescreen” was accurate. It simply means that the way things rolled out, the FO found Allen to be their choice in those circumstances.

Also, stating things like it’s who Donovan wanted isn’t necessarily gospel truth. Go through the 400 or so pages of draft priespects thread and when people see something exciting they’ll say “wow, take him at 21!” It isn’t really all that literal, just showing some excitement, but isn’t anyone’s final thoughts, all things considered.

I’m not saying that to rain on a parade. Just saying that because we balance out pros and cons doesn’t mean that the pros we give PR for should be the gospel truth of why we target someone.

e.g. need something to sell on Lyles and since there wasn’t much, the best argument that rises to the surface is the balance beam.
 
The pick seems like a solid choice for us. We need solid role players that are on cheap contracts if we want to build a winning team. He might not be an all-star potential but he has the potential to be a solid starter or a good off the bench guy.

Its too bad Denver will never trade with us again. I really wanted MPP. That seemed like a really good risk at that point. I wonder what the cost was to move up to one of those Clippers picks at 12/13.

I do trust the FO. They are slowing building and are very calculated with their decisions. I would prefer to take more risks but our team will never do that.

Yes... don’t take Gorgei Deing take Rudy Gobert. (That is the exception and most miss)

Okobo has some of the markers of the classic guy everyone misses.

I have seen some compare jimmy butler Eric Gordon and other to Allen. This is similar to the Hood pick though and may end up as a good value.

DL Knows more on Okobo so I trust he accounted for ceiling.
 
The Jazz weren't swinging for the fences. They wanted to draft a guy with a projectable role with the current group and someone who was a proven shooter. I think they really think highly of Grayson Allen. Given what the Jazz were looking for in a player, I could believe that Allen was in their top 8 - 10 targets.
