Jazz trade John collins

I mean, if we got Flagg this year I think the Jazz might ahve gone the route in using their salaries to get a star. Who knows. Just because something didnt happen doesnt mean keeping that option open was a bad move.
I don't know. The point would make more sense if I was making a post-hoc argument. This kind of outcome is pretty similar to what a few of us were saying from the get-go, so it's harder to combat a tangible manifestation with a hypothetical. But I'm actually pretty surprised by the return (taking back so much less salary and getting a second rounder), so this outcome surpassed my expectation.

You can't carry capspace like you could in the past. There is a much narrower band between the minimum salary and the cap.

The Jazz could have taken on expiring contracts each year instead of doing Collins and Clarkson. Then they would start the offseason with cap space they could then use for a star trade or to take bad salary.

@Handlogten's Heros, please take center stage and give us a good lecture about John Collins and "opportunity cost". You've been right all along, and it's time for a victory lap.
Yeah... my position was the "profit" from that deal had to be in the acquisition. The Hawks should have had to pony up the Kings pick to get that one done. Getting Collins for free likely cost us 6-10 second round picks in cap space we could have rented out. This offseason would have been killer to have going into FA with cap space when only one team had space. Made us a little better (last year it didn't matter) but maybe we do or don't have Cody...

I think this trade saves a little of that value if they get a few salary dumps. It appears Austin is more willing to take an L and build the right way... so we are headed the right direction. Mission accomplished?

I think at some level Colins was Markkenan insurance. The play a similar archetype that fits well with Kessler. I we had fould a great deal for Lauri, we had Collins.

Now, however, we still have Lauri and it looks like we are keeping him and we have Flip as Collins insurance.

Yes, we need to have at least 90% of the salary cap on the books on the first day of the season to get our share of the luxury tax payments.

Take on salary dumps with the trade exception and MLE. Fill the coffers with second round picks. No offer sheets in FA. Hold our nose for one year. Go into next offseason with a bunch of cap space and decide what you want to do with it.

Damn!! Gave up a total of 3 veterans and received a couple lessor veterans plus 2 second round picks? I don't really see the value of saving on salary if the team does not plan to sign any quality free agents. If / when they trade Markkanen, I hope they get more back.
