Jeff Withey Signed

It is a curious turnaround. I remember hearing DL spin that "Favors is really a 5" in 2014 pre-season, and thinking that he does not really see it that way, but is trying to rationalize Kanter-Favors as a starting front court.
Yes, there was always concern about the Kanter/Favors combination, even before KOC & DL committed to them by not bringing back Jefferson or Millsap. Of course, over the past 2 years we've seen Favors expand his range and develop some offensive moves. What Utah loses on offense by Derrick not having range out to the three is more than made up for on the defensive end by the Favors/Gobert juggernaut.

Agree it is a turnaround. With "small ball" in vogue, I really thought we'd see Utah go after a PF and have Favors split his minutes between PF and C. But hasn't Derrick expressed in the past that he doesn't like playing the 5 and considers himself a PF? Maybe DL and QS have finally decided to have Favors concentrate on one position and not have to take the physical pounding of also playing the 5.

I love the signing. I think he and Booker are "solid enough" to provide two important things for our bigs: rest and reduced pressure. We've got Lyles and Pleiss coming in as backups who are likely both going to be major liabilities (assuming typical learning curves) for most of the year. This takes the pressure off playing either of them if they're losing a game for us and still means we've got someone who can give Favors and Gobert a rest without totally having to change on-court philosophies. I think Withey will be here for the season, and he gives us solid two-deep depth at all positions with the 2 and 3 positions going 3 deep.

Trend in NBA is to value stretch bigs, undervalue rim protectors. DL is making a contrarian bet and picking him up for value.
Excellent point. I never realized Withey was much of a rim protector until seeing the stats. Utah is one of the few teams that is really committed to shut-down interior defense.

Good points. Lyles is a project and we have no idea how Pleiss will fit. Utah is committed to designing their schemes with Gobert in the middle. If Withey can be Gobert-lite, Jazz can run the same offense and defense with their 2nd unit.

Although he's older, Withey could be an effective backup in Quin's system. I guess the way to look at it is, if the Jazz do decide to keep 6 bigs, is Withey a better fit than Cooley or Jerrett? And the answer, IMO, is probably yes.

PROBABLY??? SERIOUSLY????

Well, Withey didn't do much last year. Jerrett showed in his DLeague highlights that he can shoot and actually has some fairly decent offensive moves. He didn't get any playing time last season after coming over. He also has a guaranteed contract. There is a chance Jerrett lights it up in the pre-season and becomes that "stretch-4" the Jazz are seeking. And Pleiss plays well enough that DL and QS feel comfortable with him as Gobert's full-time backup, with no need for a 3rd center. I don't think it happens, but it could.

Lol. Grant Jerrett sucks.
He can shoot. 41% on his 3's in college and 38% in the Dleague. I'd say that's far from "sucking." He could be a role player if Snyder believes there are situations where he wants 3PT range. And that's a commodity we don't have with any of our other bigs.

But yes, it is a small chance he makes the roster, even with his guaranteed deal. IF Utah keeps 6 bigs, I think they'd rather go with another 5 than a role player at the 4. Lyles needs to get any minutes that Favors and Booker don't play.

Have you seen him play an actual game? Not just highlights? He's so far from being a role player in the league...lmao. He's terrible.

Jazz are going to be the tallest team in the league if they keep this up.
