I was responding to Zerol's claim that "Knight is already a much better shooter than Harris." That's why.


Comparing their freshman stats, Knight averaged twice as many turnovers, half as many steals, a third as many blocks, and fewer points-per-shot. He also had a lesser Offensive Rating, Effective FG%, True FG%, and FT rate (that is, Devin got to the free throw line more often per shot attempt).

I don't believe that constitutes being "better than Harris in every single category."

I didn't base my statement on stats, but on the games I watched. Harris is not being respected as a shooter in the NBA (although I think he improved towards the end of the season).

Knight also attempted many more 3 point shots than Harris in college.

It's like if someone has the same stats and physical dimensions as another NBA player that means they will be the same type of player in the NBA. Devin Harris would be a great player if he was injury prone or inconsistent. Knight has proven to be neither. He led Kentucky to a deep NCAA run something that Harris didn't do his freshman year..

Are you saying that opponents are more closely defending (respecting) Knight than they are Harris, and that Knight, I presume, would have discernibly superior percentages under equal defensive circumstances?

That's an interesting claim, but I would suggest that the NBA provides noticeably tougher defensive circumstances all around, and that Devin Harris still manages to shoot as good a percentage as Knight under rigorous NBA circumstances (and perhaps even better, considering that the NBA FG% extends beyond the college 3-line).

And I would also point out that Devin Harris goes to the free throw line far more frequently than Knight (more per minute, and per shot attempt). While that is by no means definitive, it would not be a stretch to imagine that fouls are committed by close defenders (ie, respect), and that Devin Harris gets far more of that kind of defensive respect than Brandon Knight.

In view of these things, I am still confused by your statement that Brandon Knight is "already a much better shooter than Harris." It's a very strong claim that just doesn't seem to be the case, but I could be wrong.

I don't see how this relates. Both shot enough college 3s to provide reliable samples.

I don't think Knight/Harris college comparisons are going to be very telling, anyway. Unless I'm mistaken, Wisconsin ran one of those Princeton style offenses. But I'm too lazy to look it up, that's just my memory.

Half-right. Wisconsin and Bo Ryan run the swing offense but they do alot of UCLA shuffle cuts and play a slower pace halfcourt offense. I completely agree that comparing statistics from 8-10 years ago from a PG running the swing offense in the Big 10 to a freshman PG playing under John Calipari in the SEC isn't going to be very telling.

Obviously I'm not an expert in it, it's just the release seems a bit rush and as Locke has said, he seems to bring the ball low and come up with it which I don't think helps with accuracy. Also it seems to be block prone to me..

I'm warming on Knight. He's got great form on his jump shot, although his 3 looks a bit odd. Doesn't look to use his legs as much as his could with his longer shots.

They also shot the same percentage from the college three (37%).

I'm not saying you're wrong, I just don't understand why you would say that Knight is a "much better" shooter. Can you explain?

I thought maybe Knight got better as the season went on, but I checked his last 5 games and he shot 32%. In the 5 games before that he shot 34%. It seems like he got progressively worse.

I know he had some Sundiata Gaines moments, but so did Sundiata Gaines.

Sundiata Gaines had some Sundiata Gaines moments? Are you sure about that? The odds against a guy having a moment that just happened to be named after him have to be astronomical!

If you guys think the Jazz don't need a backup pg that can hit the three, and is big enough to play a couple mins at sg next to Harris with potential to be an outstanding starring pg if not an allstar in a year or two is freaking crazy. Do the Jazz need Knight? Absolutely. Do they need him more than Kantor? I don't know, only KOC knows because he is the only one that has sort of seen him play.

What is the motivation is to release such a video? Kings pick 5 right? The video was cut a lot, and in the uncut episodes, Knighted missed only 2 2pters and 2 3ptrs (with that tenacious D) and then all other episodes were made shots - thats good. (But many were pylon-avoiding layups and dunks.) I guess the only reason to do that video is to deliver something to your starving fans - a nugget of info during the off-season. It was a worthless 3 mins of the evaluation. (Could be valuable to see if he could catch on to run the plays asked of him, or to get him warmed up, but ther was not anything more noteworthy than that.) I'll bet a good portion of the JazzFanz Nation would hit that many shots in a pylon D situation. (Sorry if i shoudn't have contorted a Harpring one-liner.)

I like Knight but I wouldn't take him at 3. I think he is a younger Devin Harris.

That might be a good thing. Harris was an all-star with Dallas and his game has declined a bit since then. If Knight could come in and play all-star quality ball in 3 years or so, just as Favors and Hayward are starting to become (or have become) real forces at their positions...that would be a pretty lethal 1-2-4. Just find a SF and Jefferson would probably be sufficient at the 5, especially if Favors continues to develop a top-rate defeensive game.
