Lauri re-signs for 5 years 238 million

Yeah and again I think its part of the issue with how the Jazz have positioned Collin. He's a sixth man type... well we have a sixth man type at home... and the sixth man at home is Cole Anthony.

If they had started him all year... given him minutes... I think the view would be different.
That wouldn't have changed anything. It's not like this is the first time the league sees Collin Sexton. He's a known quantity and he's always been the same player.

This is why I roll my eyes when fans suggest that a team is "showcasing" a player to pump up his trade value. Every rotation guy in the NBA is well known. GM's make wrong decisions now and then but you can't fool them by giving a guy extra minutes.

The league sees Collin as a small sparkplug off the bench who plays with blinders on. Not exactly a player type that's coveted these days.

Except he wasn't the same player last year as his of previous years. He was much better.

Last season was his best ppg per 36 of his career, his most efficient year of his career, highest assist per game of his career (while keeping the turnovers low) and his second best rebounding year of his career.
Best BPM of his career by far.

Last season was easily his best season. And that's even with a very rough/slow start.

A tremendous amount of downside incoming in 5.4.3.2.1.....

No, for all intents and purposes he's the same player he's always been. Fierce competitor, horrible decision maker, awful defender. He drives into the trees without a plan and gets blocked while 3 of his teammates are standing on the perimeter wide open. I'd share a foxhole with Sexton but I'm not sure I'd like to play basketball with him.

His improved numbers don't matter because no team in the league is willing to give him the type of role he's had in Utah. He'd be a on a very short leash everywhere else, and that has a direct effect on his trade value. He simply doesn't have a market. Teams don't see him as a solution, they see him as something of a headache.

So this isn't the conspiracy corner and maybe this is a little like Down Payment Theory... but I had thought that if we gave $24M the max would be reduced by 24M on the back end. It was cut in half and maybe that was a give for not getting a player option or something... but also I just want to consider it "hush money" for playing along with the tank. It is clear to me that we will be developing players. We will be a bottom 6 team this year unless Lisan Al Gaib ascends to the throne... and if that happens we are good (or we are doomed... I haven't read the books... **** I think we might be doomed if that happens).
Hush Money Theory. It's good!

I think if the Lakers came with a pick and DLo that would be the best hope (Dlo rerouted or waived). They should start Sexton. Let him get his numbers and see if anyone gets excited. If not I'd find ways to manage his minutes later on in the year. He's extension eligible shortly so you could even send some hush money his way too.
I would be fine with a trade like this. Laker's get better pushing the rest of the West. DLo is an expiring so we can get an asset for picking him up and possibly an asset for the expiring status in 6 months. How's about DLo and removing the top 4 protection or DLo and a super swap for Sexton. Sexton surely makes the Lakers better than DLo. Pretty minimal risk there for the Lakers.

I need a pick... the protections would be nice to get removed of course. Sadly, we may never see a super swap we will keep trying though.

This wasn't happening much at all last season. No more than it happens with any other player who is good at getting buckets. He played at an all star level for the vast majority of the season.

His A/T ratio was not indicative of a horrible decision maker. His style isn't pretty to watch sometimes, but when he drives into the trees he's thinking about getting to the free throw line, which he was decent at.

Yep. Got to the line at almost a career high rate (6.4 per game per 36 last season vs 6.5 in 2020/21 season)

McMahon also confirmed that "Development Time" is coming. Said the excess space likely a salary dump.

I think its going to be different this time around with tanking. I think Lauri is on board (at least for 12 months) and part of that give is patience or buy-in or hush money.
Had the same thought re: the money this year when McMahon was talking about the lack of give-backs to the Jazz
