Indeed when I heard the news on this and that the they didn't report it to the police dept investigating the murder, I was like WTF and figured there has to be something more to the story and would have to hear more about it eventually.

Report what? A garbled sound and gunshots?

The exact location was not known so the police had nothing to go on and for all they know it was a prank. Perhaps they had that it was coming from his phone (or maybe they saw the dialed 911 call after the body was found) but without a location, it means nothing.

They could have started the investigation earlier rather than wait for 10 some odd days for his family to file a missing person report. Am I wrong?

We have no idea how things have exactly transpired. My comment was simply based on how people here have stated that the cops and/or 911 dispatcher dropped the ball here. They in fact very likely did not.

From what I understand, both cops and dispatchers are to take every call/scenario serious, regardless if it may be a prank. I'm sure the dispatcher screwed by not filing/reporting hearing a 911 call with a dozen gun shots and then no response from the caller.
