Milsap Extension?

I'd say a five year, 47.5M deal that's frontloaded may be attractive for both parties and won't hurt us financially as I see it. 11M, 10.25M, 9.5M, 8.75M, 8M.
Yeah, I'd be wary giving Paul anything over 10. Those numbers, especially with the front loading, look pretty good. I'd probably pull the trigger.

Millsap's one hell of a double-edged sword. He's our best player. He brings what you want in a player. And he deserves to be paid. But he's still undersized and I question whether he can start on a championship team here in Utah. I want to extend him but not at a price tag that's going to screw us or make him untradeable should the time come that we determine it's time to move on. That would work out rather well, with Favor's and Hayward's extensions looming. If he wants more than that, I look to trade him.

Agreed but there's a little flexibility there to offer more imo. I think we could go slightly higher without it adversely affecting our cap situation. For instance, I'd probably go up to 5 years, 50M w/ 13, 11.5, 10, 8.5, 7 per. Not sure if that's doable according to the CBA but in some ways, this is even better, as on the back end, his number is so, so reasonable. Heck, this contract is 750K less over the last three years, compared to my first suggestion.

If we decide to extend Millsap (I'd be ok with 4/32 or 4/36 maximum), we should try to do everything to get rid of Jefferson and Harris before the season starts. We need to show which direction we want to take. Let Millsap start this season and bring him off the bench next season as a great sixth man with solid minutes. Favors and Kanter are our core, our twin towers along with Burks and Hayward as solid players. Add a pure point guard and an athletic wing that can shoot and play some defense and we could become contenders in like 2-3 years. Sign some veterans and I like our chances.

With Harris and Jefferson on this roster, we won't get further. We need to take a direction before the season starts. Get rid of both of them and let our young core grow together. This is how we can get to the next level. Give them solid minutes. Bring Millsap as a sixth man off the bench next season when Kanter should be able to start along side Favors. The time for change has come. Enough is enough KOC. You should be more aggressive with your moves. Hopefully he will show some signs before the season starts...

It will most likely be more than 4/32, that was what he got paid his last contract and he has gotten better. We are probably looking more in the 4/40 range.

Personally, I can't see any serious extension talk until the draft and FA has played out. Even then, I find it doubtful that KOC will sign anybody to an extension. Too much to figure out with Favors/Kanter, and maintaining Sap/Al as trade chips going into next season is too valuable. Additionally, the Memo TPE we still have is a factor.

Well at least if extension talks fail, we can probably be assured he will be traded at the deadline.

No way. Not unless something happens, like significant injury problems, that take us way, way out of the playoff hunt. Utah isn't going to be trading starters at the deadline in a playoff year. Won't happen.

You talk like you know KOC. Yet you were clearly surprised by the DWill trade and in almost all cases everyone has been in the dark previous to any moves he has made. I would like you to demonstrate WHY you are so certain of the future of our GM's moves. This guy has clearly stated that everyone aside from Favors was available for discussion (this was prior to last year's draft) and is no stranger to doing unpredictable things. I get it that you believe there is a conspiracy to allow Al Jefferson to ruin the Utah Jazz Forever but C'mon, man. You have never predicted anything KOC has done before. If you have I certainly didn't see it.

Give me a reason to follow your train of thought.

Great points. I love Paul as a Jazz player. And his attitude and effort really set an example for the others. That said, Favors should be the starting 4. And Kanter, hopefully, becomes the starting 5. If not, Utah needs to make a trade for a center. I wish Millsap would accept a backup role. He could absolutely dominate opposing subs and become one of the best 6th men in the league. As a starter, he's above average, but generally starts to wear down after a few months. There are just too many big PF's in the league.

Have Paul work on his conditioning and speed during the off-season. He could then play a big SF when matchups dictate Utah could be successful with that lineup. I hope he stays, but I'm in agreement Utah can't overpay, not with the new CBA and more punitive consequences for exceeding the cap.

I had almost forgotten. Jazz are a bit tight next season, but could certainly take on salary beyond as Jefferon and then Harris come off the books (I'm assuming Sap stays). This could even come into play for the draft. Jazz take on a large salary, and give up Jefferson or Harris in exchange for a lottery pick.

I hope KOC has some balls in play. I don't want to see next year's hope hinging solely on improvement from Favors, Kanter, Burks and Hayward.

I hope KOC has some balls in play.

And this is the eternal debate on this forum: whether KOC has some balls in play or if someone's just giving his balls some play. It's what separates you from KOCBEGONE, each representing an unreasonable end of the very polar spectrum.

eh? If the Jazz let CJ, Blake and Josh go, pick up Jamaal's option, hold onto Demarre and re-up Evans for his qualifying offer, they'll have $54.8mm committed to 12 players. The Luxury tax level is guaranteed to be at least $70.307mm next season. The Jazz would be $15.5mm under the tax. That's enough space to use both the MLE AND Memo TPE.

Most recently, I correctly predicted what happened with Memo when everyone else thought he was going to be amnestied. As for Deron, I was talking about trading him before it happened, and I first posted about it as soon as Lebron took less money to walk away from Cleveland. I thought KOC would wait for the new CBA to see if there would be a francise player tag, but I certainly wasn't surprised that he was traded.

You should stick to posting when you're drunk. You're slightly less stupid.

I would like you to demonstrate WHY you are so certain of the future of our GM's moves.

Is this really that complicated? KOC made a comment recently about not wanting to disturb things, and I think that's exactly where our FO is at with this team. The team has good chemistry right now, and they're going to be careful about not messing that up. It's really that simple, in that I don't think Utah will make any big moves at the deadline, because moves at the deadline can throw things out of whack at a time when you want your players to start hitting their stride. That doesn't mean I don't think anyone will be traded at the deadline, but certainly not key players like Al or Sap.

KOC's always played his cards close to his chest. Even if he was planning a blockbuster trade, he'd STILL say something along the lines of "we aren't planning anything". When's the last time O'Connor has ever said "By the way we're working on this deal stay tuned to see if it goes through."

Edit: Steve Luhm tweeted today that Kevin O'Connor has said "Just because we're quiet doesn't mean we're not working. We're talking to a lot of people about a lot of things."

I'm curious. You used the phrase "close to the chest." It's the same line Harvey Dent utters in The Dark Knight after having discovered that Commissioner Gordon was not in fact dead. I swear I had never heard that before I watched that film and it bothered me when I heard it. I had always just heard "close to the vest." Is this a regional thing? Nolan's British. Can anyone help me out here?
