Mitt Romney wins NH straw poll

You guys are severely underrating how quickly Republicans will abandon their beliefs if they think it will hurt Democrats in any way. The whole being-a-Mormon and constantly-flip-flopping issue will just kinda fade away as long as Mittens talks about how much Obama hates America.

Meh the republicans and democrats all do the same thing, anything they can outside of any moral restraint to hurt the other side. All that matters is that the next republican/democrat get elected, who cares about what is actually best for the country.

I still do not think they can get any groundswell big enough to overcome "big religion" in getting Mitt the nomination.

Although I have been a fan of sometime of having a true businessman running the country for a while (GW didn't count as he fell into all of his deals). I think that is the only way to drive some fiscal accountabillity and best use of resources for once. Any more the country ends up being run to get the next guy elected rather than to do anything of substance. I think a truly business savvy president would turn that on it's ear and at least be less inept than GW or Obama both have been.

Not a huge surprise but it was a surprise by how much he won by. He got 35% and Ron Paul came in second at only 11%. Also it was interesting how bad Huckabee did. Its way too early but.......

Could Romney get the nomination?

Any chance he could beat Obama?

I think it is all about name recognition for this Romney win.
I think he would be a great president because of his leadership ability.
His strengths would be the economy which is most people's top concern @ the moment.
His Mormonism wouldn't be as big a deal as long as Huckabee or someone like him didn't run and take away the Southern Christian vote.
His weakness is that he signed the mandatory health insurance law in Mass. which is too much like Obamacare, but he could get around that by supporting repeal.
He isn't a flip-flopper as the leftist media suggests. The only thing that you could make that claim on is the abortion issue...and he only said Massachusetts was a pro-choice state and that he would not seek to change laws on abortion.

If Romney were to win the nomination I think Obama would be reluctant to bring up the weird religion thing because of his own issues with religion.

Right now I would support Chris Christie and a few other fiscal conservative Governors.

The unfortunate thing is that Republican primary process will always elect the worst possible candidate because the initial primary states are all liberal.

So the 23rd straw poll win is the crucial tipping point for visibility?

So he should flip-flop now?

BTW: This is an example of one of Romney's strengths in my mind. He's a relative throwback to the heady days of 1994 when "Obamacare" was the Republican counterproposal to "Hillarycare." Today's conservatives would call the Gingrich-led "Contract with America" conservatives pinkos.

If Romney were to win the nomination I think Obama would be reluctant to bring up the weird religion thing because of his own issues with religion.

I don't think Dems have a recent electoral history of stoking religious fervor regardless of the candidate they put up? Who was going to beat the Bible for the Dems? Walter Mondale? Jimmy Carter is the last Dem presidential candidate that I can think of that was what I would describe as sincerely religious.

Wha?

Iowa is a liberal state? Nevada? South Carolina?

I mean, I get New Hampshire. But I hardly consider cornfed midwesterners, southerners, and the state with the most libertarian policies in the country to be the picture of liberalism.

Nah, "this" and all polls farther than 2 years out.
Wanting to repeal Federally mandated health insurance (with all the other garbage included) is not a flip-flop on signing state mandated health insurance into law.
Yes, Obama has "sincerity" issues on religion. I found it amusing that after the recent poll about Americans being unsure of Obama's religious affiliation he suddenly went to church after months of Sunday golf trips.

I agree. Even if the issues have points in common it is highly unlikely the line items are identical. In that case I would hope the candidate can look at them both objectively and make a decision, even if it does seem contradictory.

Along the lines of flip-flopping I think it is funny how often "flip-flop" gets thrown around when almost every politician that gets elected does exactly that on points that got them elected, all to satisfy special-interest groups.

It is the sign of a weak-minded individual who cannot take into account new information, or grow enough as a person to change their opinion on something. Sometimes it really is a flip-flop (see video), but to discount true changes in opinion as "flip-flopping" is puerile. I want a candidate grown up enough to say "I thought this way before, then I learned something so I changed my mind and now think this way".

Huntsman Said to Be Planning to Resign as Ambassador
By Hans Nichols - Jan 31, 2011

Jon Huntsman, the U.S. ambassador to China, has told the Obama administration he plans to resign, an administration official said, a sign the former Utah governor may bid for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination.

Obama has been informed that Huntsman intends to leave in May, according to the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Huntsman, 50, a Republican, was in his second term as Utah governor when President Barack Obama nominated him to be ambassador on May 16, 2009. He speaks Mandarin Chinese and was ambassador to Singapore under former President George H.W. Bush.

Huntsman’s plan to resign was reported earlier by the Washington Post.

Before being named ambassador by Obama, Huntsman was the campaign co-chairman of the president’s opponent in the 2008 election, Republican Senator John McCain. Immediately after the election, he was cited as a potential contender for his party’s nomination in 2012.

When Chinese President Hu Jintao was in Washington on Jan. 19, Obama was asked about a potential challenge from Huntsman and joked that, “I’m sure that him having worked so well with me will be a great asset in any Republican primary.”

He also had praise for Huntsman’s service as ambassador, saying it demonstrated that “he and I believe that partisanship ends at the water’s edge.”

In an interview with Newsweek magazine published Jan. 1, Huntsman declined to comment on whether he might run for president in 2012, while saying, “I think we may have one final run left in our bones.”

No way Palin wins. I don't believe Romney can win either. The Mormon issue will come up. Huckabee brought it up last time. Romney and Huckabee can't stand each other so you know their will be sparks. Personally, I don't think there is any candidate out there that can beat Obama unless the economy continues to tank.

The Republicans have done a poor job of finding a moderate Republican who can draw in the conservative Democrats and Independents. I am an Independent and there is no one on the Republican side that I would consider giving my vote to because in the end I think the EV run the Republican party.
