NBA Free Agency Moves in General (related to the Jazz, but not just moves made by the Jazz)

With today's signings(which are OK individually) the Jazz pretty much gave up on next year's free agency by adding about 10M to the payroll for next year. And next year they will try to sign Hood/Exum/Favors which would lock us into this core for the foreseeable future. They did exactly what I expected them to do and it's kind of disappointing - they locked into mediocrity... unless Mitchell or Hood or Exum blows up and turns into a top 20 type of player.

Next year's free agent class sucks. Anyone good is restricted and Exum and Hood may actually be some of the premier free agents.

Rubio/Exum/Neto
Hood/Mitchell/Burks
Ingles/Sefolosha
Love/Joe Johnson/Jerebko
Gobert/Bradley

We are solid everywhere other than SF, which looks pretty terrible.

But Love, Gobert and a young one can make up for that.

Saw this on reddit. What do you think this means? We in on the Melo megadeal? Favors gone? Nothing?

The thing about this is - this one was recorded before the last two signings, so... I don't know if it still applies.

Well, we don't know if the second years are guaranteed. And even if they are, the contacts seem pretty tradable to me.

Don't know why you're assuming these deals don't have a TO on the 2nd year. Sounds like you're slipping into panic mode again. From my POV, looks like DL is being very careful NOT to lock us into anything, and instead is maintaining some flexibility.

For all you know, Hood, Exum and Favors may all be involved in a trade in the next few days.

There are no easy answers to quickly recover from the Haywood loss, and tanking isn't and never was an option. However, I think DL will keep that option open for next year if we can't work things out this year. For now, have a little faith in Rudy. He believes he can win, and I think he deserves the benefit of the doubt.

Maybe because nothing about team options is being reported? And I don't see what's panicky about my post? I am not buying this big trade people have been talking about today. I will believe it when I see it... and then I will reevaluate my stance on where we stand as a team. Right now, this is what I see... As good as Rudy is, he can't win it all by himself. We need serious steps forward by multiple players.

Before the Thabo and Jerebko signings, dumping Burks on some team (without taking back salary) and renouncing the rights to Johnson and Favors would put the Jazz at ~$83M, counting cap holds for Exum and Hood and minimum roster charges. Who is this mythical FA Utah is going to sign for $17M?

If nothing else happens, Jazz have essentially replaced Hill with Rubio, added better depth (Jerebko and Sefolosha replacing Diaw and Withey) and Mitchell replaces Hayward.

I'll take that. Hayward's loss stings. But we now have a serious ROY candidate. Jazz will be small at the 3. Rudy hopefully can help cover for that.

I did see a report from someone on twitter earlier today after it was announced that Sefolosha had agreed that said the Jazz had various options in structuring the deal. I would assume Jerebko's situation is similar. They haven't signed yet. Jingles hasn't either. So nobody is discussing or reporting possible team options because they just don't know. I'm going to keep an open mind until I know. DL has already talked about how important he feels next summer is. So I trust that he has a plan to open cap space if necessary.

I think Jingles holding off on signing his deal allows the Thabo and Jerebko deals to fit under the cap - if Diaw is released. This would leave the MLE free heading into next year. Those amounts aren't random. I'm sure DL and his capologist have the calculations down to the penny.

Next summer could be just referring to Exum, Hood and Favs who will all be FA's. Jazz could conceivably still be under the tax even if they have to match big offers for Dante and Rodney. I don't see Utah with the ability to pay Favors $20-$25m.
