What's new

Netflix recs?

I'm watching Dumb Money right now and love it.

Next I'm going to watch The Big Short

(No idea if either movie is on Netflix btw)

Dumb Money is on netflix. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would, Nick Offerman and Seth Rogen as the hedge fund managers scenes were great. Paul Dano was convincing as Keith Gill. It is a good David vs Goliath story.

I just finished it. Nice to see that most of the David's mostly won and most of the Goliaths kinda ish lost (though not really though)

I enjoyed seeing AOC go after the Goliaths.

Not Netflix but Hulu

Shogun

I'm not going to provide a full review now, but this is at least a VERY good show.

If you've read the book this is worth watching. If you haven't read the book this is basically a must watch.

If you watched the 1980 mini series and liked it this is a worthy update that is even more true to the book.

This is a well made show. I have my criticisms but I'm going to save them until the show is complete.

enjoying this immensely

Sorry mate, no I mean Shogun
Oh yeah, that has been amazing. Better than the older mini series.

I'm also dumb because I ranted about the 3 Body problem in another thread but mentioned Shogun there and didn't fully read your response before posting.

gotcha all good I've heard so many conflicting opinions on that 3 Body show

That's why I asked if you had read it. Seems the 1 star reviews are from the book readers and the better reviews are from people just watching the show.

That book series is immensely difficult to turn into a show. I couldn't imagine it being entertaining that way, but I did really hope that it wasn't turned into stupid nonsense. The trailer was disappointing but I'm going to try to judge the show on it's own. Not as I imagined things as I read the book.

That said I've read Shogun twice and listened to the audiobook twice plus watched the mini-series al least twice. This version of it is fantastic.

Currently working my way thru Severance. This is a LOT of show, very dense, very weird, very dark. You can definitely tell it's created by a great comedic mind, even tho it's not a comedy.

One of my favorites.
So good.
I love this type of show. The leftovers, lost, outer range etc. shows based on a strange mystery

So finished watching Adolescence, one of the best things I've ever seen on film or TV. Brilliantly acted, Stephen Graham and the rest of the cast were just amazing. Its heavy stuff but wow
I'm putting it on my list. I'm needing something else to watch anyway so I think I will start it today

Yeah, I finished Adolescence about a week or two ago. The last two episodes were brutal, absolutely brutal, to get through on an emotional level. Graham was amazing and the kid is the best child actor I’ve ever seen I think. I’ve never seen The Piano and a couple of other films I suppose but Jesus, episode 3 was a prodigal display and blew away Norton’s similar role in Primal Fear. The latter never scared me. The accent and delivery always felt a bit forced. This kid in Adolesence though was terrifying imo.

Tangentially, as much as I felt for the parents and they seemed like decent people, one part stuck with me that demonstrated they weren’t very good at all and that’s when the mother comments about seeing the boy’s lights on at one in the morning. I see it all the time in an urban high school. Parents stop parenting, thinking these kids can manage themselves, and children are left to their own devices. Up til midnight, 1, 2 in the morning, if they even go to bed. Cell phones, social media, video games, porn, they’re hooked. It’s a major problem in society and I imagine is a far worse problem in poverty-stricken areas than not. Graham and the woman were wonderful. I felt terrible for them. But they did fall short as parents.

First graders regularly tell me about how they are so tired because they are up until 1 or 2 in the morning. It's nuts. I hear kids in elementary school telling me about drinking coffee.
I feel for you teachers big time.

I don't let my kid drink soda and never stays up past 9 even on the weekends. (She only almost 9 though)
