What's new

New Year 2025

I'm not a huge fan of fireworks, but have set them off for kids a bunch of times. Never had anything close to causing injury or fire.

The problem is not the fireworks. The problem is too many stupid people. Some have fireworks.
I used to like fireworks. But now that I’m a dog owner and have a toddler who goes to bed before 9 (and wakes up way early) I can’t stand them. Especially in the summer here in Utah, where we light them off for the entire month of July when the air quality is low and the fire danger is high. Last year I found debris of a few fireworks my neighbor had set off that burned a few of my plants. Could’ve started a big fire. Just dumb to light those things off in 100 degree temperatures.

Anyway, happy 2025!

July really is the dumbest time to allow random jackasses to light off fireworks in the middle of neighborhoods.

I don't think they are stupid just because they hurt people and start fires. They are also like literally lighting your money on fire, they scare dogs/pets/babies/veterans, they keep people awake who need to be asleep, they make garbage all over the place, they pollute the air. And then of course there are the fires and injuries that occur each holiday that are involved in.

There are just WAY more cons than pros when you make a firework pro/con list.

Fireworks are stupid. It's stupid that anyone even does them.
A neighbor down the street from us lit his shed in fire with a mortar that fell over and shot right into his shed, which he had left open as that was where his fireworks were. Burst inside, lighting random partially-filled gas cans and other standard shed **** on fire. He put most of it out with a hose before the firetruck arrived. But he isn't the sharpest tool in the burned-down shed to begin with. I will say it was ****ing entertaining for us, that is for sure.

Great start to the year with another USA mass murder.

and this...

Dickheads are frequently hilarious when they don't hold office.

Hoe about dogs? Dogs bark, scare people, cost a ton, tear up homes, and injure people. Off leash dogs injure others pets/babies/veterans, they keep people awake who need to be asleep, they make garbage and feces all over the place, which can pollute the groundwater. That is a lot of cons too. And dogs are awesome, I have three. Yet many people hate them.

As I said, I am not a fan of fireworks, so I largely agree with you. However, some people really love fireworks, and clearly have a great time with them. My neighbor was setting **** off from 9pm until 1 am on New Years. It annoyed me some, but I put in earplugs and brought the dog beds in my room so the pups stayed calm. As long as he is responsible, I don't have an issue with them celebrating their way.

Fireworks boost economy, bring families together, build community, and some people really find joy in watching them.

Let people do things responsibly.

There needs to be stronger regulation of them in Utah. In Utah, we basically let the public light off whatever they want for the entire month of July. Few communities are able to ban them. This is dumb, as we live in one of the driest states in the nation. Our air quality sucks, so when it’s hazy as **** and we have air quality warnings on KSL, how does it make sense to then make it worse with more fireworks? I’m fine with fireworks, but you should only be able to light them at specific times and specific locations. Just this past summer some folks lit the area near the Thanksgiving Pt Golf course on fire with their fireworks. A few summers before that, Traverse Mtn was ablaze due to fireworks. Every year we have problems in our neighborhoods along the wasatch front because we allow neighborhood fireworks for the entire month of July. Property damage, higher insurance rates, health problems, and loss of life aren’t great.

Like most things in America, we need to behave like adults. But like most things here, any regulation is seen as an infringement on the free dumb of manchildren who need their boom booms to overcompensate for shortcomings in other respects of their lives.

PS I bet the same people in your neighborhood who have bitched for years about inflation and the economy are the same people who bought thousands of dollars worth of fireworks. There’s definitely a type.

Yep.

And as a home owner I’m blown away that we live in a state that allows them for the entire month of July. Other states restrict them to certain days and actually enforce those laws while other states designate certain areas. I’ve noticed that somehow Pepperwood (east sandy where the rich people live) have figured out a way to ban them. Why can’t “normal” towns or neighborhoods do the same?

You easily could designate certain areas or parks to be your “firework area” and/or restrict them to one weekend In July. Many times in June now since every city has its own “summer days” celebration. It’s literally every weekend in Utah county there’s a town blowing off boom booms. While I don’t necessarily hear In Lehi what Orem or Provo is doing, I certainly smell and breathe it.

One pro of the Olympics coming here is I hope we get hit with a serious inversion. An embarrassing inversion might finally cause the legislature enough embarrassment for them to actually pass legislation to help clean up our ****** air.
