Nah man... he was smart. He might get like 5M less this year but will lock in another 80M+ in a market flush with cash.

I would add him for the right price for sure as a small ball four he’s worth $20M.

Always secure the bag when you are healthy... if you know the Kings like you definitely open up those negotiations... just see where it goes ya know. They have like a billion dollars in cap space... maybe he gets 4/100M... maybe those dumb bastards give him 5 years.

Couldn’t he have opted in then negotiated an extension though... I think he might want to see what’s out there.

He could have, but wouldn't the extension have to escalate from his current salary number? Not sure the Kings, or anyone, are going to pay that. At this rate, he gets a long term contract, the Kings get his salary more in line with his worth. I'll bet it is front loaded to help them when their youngsters come off of their rookie contracts, and makes him a valuable trade chip with the declining salary.

He could decline salary... extension has to be within 20% I believe... so could have done 20-22M... at very least I know they could have it decline by 8% annually. I would think they would have just said opt in and we will extend you and do another 3 years at 60M... rather than him opting out. His cap hold is more than the salary so it’s better for the just to have him on the books.
