What's new

Nikola Mirotic

But they're also both products of our FO. You've gotta have faith in them with that kind of track record.
I have faith in them. But just because they can make good picks doesn’t mean there’s always a DM or Rudy Gobert there. There’s often a Trey Burke, a Trey Lyles, or a Dante Exum.

I would do next year's pick without protection. I would pull all of my players in individually and tell them that I did that because I believe in them. When Morotic came in I would tell him I did it because I believed in him. I believed in my team and I knew they wouldn't let me down.

Succeeding at draft picks is part correctly evaluating talent, but it is moreso a numbers games - a coin flip. Donovan Mitchell aside, the Jazz succeeded in the past when we had two first round picks. One of them bombed, and the other succeeded. No one will know for sure who will succeed and who will not. If you have lots of picks your chances go up. That being said, I would evaluate this years draft to see where the levels of talent are, and where would the Jazz likely fall and make a guess what kind of player Nikola could become (I think a Memo type player with better feet and dribble) and ask which will be better, sooner and longer. My guess if you don't get a top 7 talent in this years draft, then it very much more likely that Nikola will be better. I would put a top 10 protection or more on the pick and get him.

For examples of players winning titles early:
Duncan won in yrs 2, 6, 8, 10 and 17
Lebron won in yrs 9, 10 and 13

Those were #1 picks. I am in the camp of in tank mode, stash draft picks. With a core in place, I feel it's much higher probability to go with proven talent over picks.

**** that. Rudy goes down again and you can be out of the playoffs. Never trade unprotected picks.

The Jazz cant tank. It's impossible. Give up that fantasy. You also dont start tanking in February if you actually want it to be effective. You do it in November.

I think it’s a stigma thing. We traded for Hill and it was a one year thing. Still worth it, I’d say, but a lot of people aren’t happy. Then we traded a pick for Rubio and we saw how it worked out. So trading a pick for an established player has an icky stigma, and people are expecting more diamonds in the rough as if they’re almost a given at this point. It would be silly for DL to look at the Mitchell deal and think to himself “Aw, shucks. I already traded two assets for a guard in Trey Burke and missed out on Giannis. Lesson learned.” and then hung up the phone on Denver.

I think this is way off base. You convert future assets such as picks into "win-now" players when you're succeeding or on the precipice of success for obvious reasons. The team we had last year was legitimately good with a star in Hayward and a defensive beast in Gobert, combined with deep talent. The talent was so deep that the team was able to sustain success through multiple injuries. And a large part of why we could be so deep was because of how team-friendly many of the contracts were like Gobert and Hood, aka rookie-scale deals. This allowed the Jazz to pursue a player like Hill, trading him into space, and acquiring a salary dump in Diaw and also signing player like Joe Johnson. If Hayward were still on this team, of course that pick would be sent out for Niko.

That’s some Disney movie ****.
