They dont need to trade for him though. They can just sign him in the off-season if they want him. They are asking for a first round pick. I'm sure they will target Favors in the off-season, but there are probably centers they would want over him.

Jazz don't want a pick put in limbo for trade purposes. Makes it impossible to trade future picks.
They can target him but its much harder to sign a guy that is a free agent and you dont have bird rights to. If they were even thinking about targeting him as a FA then they would most likely be open to a straight up trade. But again they are currently tanking.
They don't need birds rights, they have cap-space.

But we don't have that. We are not offering our 1st. Most we can offer is second rounders or as Cy pointed out, get a third team involved to give up a late 1st.
I was wondering today that If we didn't trade for Rubio, we could have used OKC's pick to trade for Mirotic.

Again, we used our ****ing mulligan on Rubio.
If the Bulls trade Robin Lopez for nothing and play Felicio for 30 mpg, I'll call it tanking. Until then, thy havent done anything to lose yet. They havent sat Mirotic. They brought back LaVine before people thought he would be ready.
I mean, imagine if the Jazz only had one pick before trading Rubio and they Jazz traded a protected first for Rubio. Then the Jazz wouldn't have a first to offer for Mirotic. So you would be pissed.
Just wait for the Cavs to be ready to trade when they give up on DeAndre Jordan.
What you're saying is that we effectively don't have a first rounder to give them, so what's the difference between not giving it up now because we don't want it locked up, or it being locked up now because we can't give it away? The Rubio deal was stupid because a blind dog knew Rubio wasn't a fit. Mirotic is a great fit. But we spent our first rounder on the "obviously not a fit" move.
I am very very doubtful any team is going to give them both an expiring contract and a 1st for Mirotic. They also have Lavine as a free agent and plan on retaining him. Their ability to offer a decent contract is going to be restricted. There are also many other reasons to get him on your team before being a FA if you want to retain them. Plus you dont have whatever team trades for him that wants him to compete with since other teams will also have salary restrictions.
Yeah, duh. Players and Coaches dont tank. FO do. That is why they want Mirotic gone. Obviously they would trade Portis if they cared about winning now.
I'm saying Jazz shouldnt give up any pick for Mirotic.
