No Extension for Walker Kessler?

I understand having more space but like... lots of teams have space. There aren't a ton of FAs... and not like we are a huge FA market. Maybe its to keep him trade eligible. Its curious to me.
Dunno, I'm always skeptical of Utah Jazz and FA market.

But maybe cap space in that sense could help the Jazz trade some player(s) into cap space and then later sign Kessler going over the cap ?

Still feels a strange plan to me.

It's natural to be skeptical of the Jazz being players in Free Agency because we have 50 years of history to suggest that we never have been. However, with all of the new cap rules, we are finding out that teams are no longer able to go out and buy whoever they want. With the hard cap and luxury tax payments, it's just not feasible or possible for players to only go to the big market teams. I think you'll see that the teams who are smart with the contracts they hand out are going to be able to get players who might not have been gettable previously just because they're the only ones with real money to spend.

The Jazz have got to be the dumbest team in the NBA! We’ve been a slave to that unnecessary protected Derick Favors pick for how many years now? Then the Markannen super max extension! For what purpose? And now not locking up the young stud that really deserves the money (before he gets injured) and the vote of confidence! Just pitiful!

No. Those guys are going top three for sure
Bummer. No matter how close to the bottom we end up we will get the 5th or 6th pick so I hope some decent talent is still available there.

The nice part of RFA in our situation is that I really don't think anyone is going to tie up enough money on Kessler to keep us from matching when that # is so ridiculously high it would be a poison pill to whomever offered it. If he shows to be that good, we'll match regardless and then they're out a player they could have realistically gotten on the market.

Kessler becomes one of the very top free agency prizes in 2026. The Wizards and Bulls both have young cores and tons of money to spend. And they do not have any long-term solutions at the center. The Jazz can easily end up facing a huge offer from one of those teams.
