It's a great way to prevent the opponent from making a 3 and tying the game.
The goal is to continue to have more points than the opponent.

I'm certain that the jazz would rather get a look at a 3 than go to the line for 2 free throws. That's how you know the blazers did the smart thing.

Also smart move to intentionally miss that 2nd free throw. Just didn't work out.
