What's new

***Official new head coach search thread*** (merged)

Here's another nugget...

Lindsey worked closely with Ferry in SA before he went to join the Hawks and Lindsey joined the Jazz.... so I'm pretty sure Lindsey knows Snyder pretty well too.

Snyder's old Duke roommate, Danny Ferry, is general manager of the Hawks. Both of them played for Mike Krzyzewski at Duke. Snyder was also Krzyzewski's assistant coach at Duke before becoming the head coach at the University of Missouri and later the Austin Toros of the NBA Development League.

Just heard on 1280 that DL is going to interview John Stockton for our head coaching position. Can you imagine the guff DL would get if he ever had to fire John Stockton? Would we take down the statue if Stockton was as bad as Ty? Would John Stockton ever give an interview as head coach? Would he teach Trey to be a real point guard? The questions are endless.

Add a new name to the list of people the Jazz will at least contact about vacant head coaching position: John Stockton.

Re: Stockton situation

Bad. Bad. Bad.

Hornacek did it the right way. He transitioned from a shooting coach, to the assistant coach, to the HC. Stockton coming in from the cold to lead this team is gonna be VERY VERY tough. Unless he has a group of very good and supportive assistants supporting him.

I can handle Snyder as an assistant, but absolutely hell no to him as a HC.

Don't think that could happen. If Snyder is an assistant under contract, why would Atlanta let him go to another team as an assistant? Aren't they only obligated if the new position is a promotion?

AS for Stockton....NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Love the guy as a player. But outside of coaching his sons' teams, he has no experience. I suspect there's really no truth to this rumor. They might be asking Stockton to return in some capacity, but doubtful it's the HC job. Lindsey would be banking his career on a guy who has never coached before - not going to happen.

So, if John Stockton decides to take the job, would Phil come out of retirement to be his #1? We know Stockton can do good with helping young PG's, as we've seen Burke and Williams do well and learn from him.

Would Stockton be able to help Favors get out and run more? There is 4-6 pts a game if a big man would just run every time down the floor.

Stockton would probably still need a defensive coach. Who does he turn to then? Does he bring back some of Ty's assistants? They don't exactly scream defensive coach to me.

Would Nate McMillan come over to coach as an assistant if he feels that Indy's situation is unstable? He would get a long term job, and if Utah turns around quickly, he could use that to get back to a head coaching job.

I think Stockton's success would depend more on his assistants than him, himself. If he can surround himself with talent, like Phil Johnson and Nate McMillian, then he could rely on them and be more of a face, motivator, etc and leave some of the in game stuff to Phil and Nate. Then, as he learns and grows as a coach, Phil retires, Nate becomes a HC somewhere, Stock takes on more of the duties.

I'm not against it if he brings in the right assistants (or Utah agrees to pay for the right assistants). That was Ty's biggest downfall. He didn't have the right assistants, or he didn't listen to them (ie, Horny wanting to run more and play the younger guys more).

Assistant Coach Jerry Sloan/Karl Malone

I can see Stockton in assistant coach/consultant role to whoever comes if rumors are true. No way in HC position.

How does Stockton as an assistant work? Wouldn't that basically be saying to whomever we hire that we have every intention of making him or her temporary?
