Official Rudy Gobert Trade Ideas Thread

Our team can’t guard anyone, because we’ve purposefully surrounded Rudy with shooters that can’t defend.

I disagree. I don't think that they looked at players to acquire and were like "well that guys a great shooter but his defense is too good so we don't want him"

I think they would prefer great shooters who are also great defenders but that they are harder to come by.

I hate to say it (I love Rudy) but this might be true. We need a PF or center who can score besides dunking it too. I still can’t believe we drafted exum over embiid
How does this 4 who can play outside stop the Clippers from driving to the basket on every play?

Play after play, I saw Jackson, Bradley, etc. drive into the center of our defense and Gobert came over to cover. On the other side of the court, our drivers have trouble penetrating against single coverage, so the Clippers didn't need someone at the rim. If you swap Gobert/Favors for Morris/Batum, we lose those games by even more.

We were still scoring over 115 points per game. We needed better defense.

Any athletically gifted person can defend. If the likes of O'Neale and 2-years-ago Ingles can defend, then so can Clarkson and Mitchell. It's a matter of will, not ability.

The will to play consistent focused defense is an ability.

If we keep Gobert, it is important to surround him with the right pieces. He is not good enough to play with just anyone, but can absolutely be elite if playing with the right players.

Gobert can be a very impactful offensive player, but needs to play with someone that can deliver him the ball precisely. That’s the reason Conley and Gobert’s minutes were matched in the regular season. If Conley comes back the Jazz need to invest in a backup guard with highly accurate passing to fill in when Conley is hurt. Even better if that guard can defend as well.

The Jazz also need a secondary rim protector/rebounder. Ideally, it is someone that can play alongside Gobert and backup 5 as well. The Jazz do not need to go small to match small lineups, they just need someone other than Gobert to be capable of playing help defense. Better perimeter defense would help as well, but not as important.

Those two pieces do not have to be superstars. A backup guard and a secondary rim protector with athleticism. If you add those pieces, perhaps in replacement of Favors and Ingles, you should still have a good offensive team that is more versatile on defense.

If Conley leaves, you need another point guard that can get Rudy the ball. If you can’t get that it is time to think about trading him.

In the general public, sure. These are professional athletes. If they didn't already have a decent amount of will power, they wouldn't be in the NBA at all.
Uhh, they got the ability to score or do other things. Being locked in on defense isnt just a thing you can flip a switch on.

Plenty of people get to the NBA level without ever needing to lock in consistently on defense.

To a point. Niang has the will but he doesn't have the agility or speed to even match up with a player like Mann. Both undrafted or late 2nds and end of bench players. One had career games, the other was played off the floor.

And Ingles is losing more than a few steps. His defense was pretty shoddy largely because it was obvious he couldn't keep up.
