I know the plus/minus stat has limitations, but it also has strengths. On a game-to-game basis it's pretty unreliable except for to say who played well that particular game. Plus it doesn't take into account quality of opponent players, namely if you're playing against starters or scrubs. But now that we're 7 games into the season, I think it might have some value to take a look.

I got the stats from here: http://stats.nba.com/team/1610612762/players-traditional. However, they report +/- per game, and I decided +/- per minute played might be more informative. So I did some spreadsheet calculations and came up with this. I know there are some rounding errors but whatever.

player +- per minute (sorted in descending order)
Ekpe Udoh 0.21
Rodney Hood 0.18
Derrick Favors 0.16
Donovan Mitchell 0.15
Joe Ingles 0.15
Thabo Sefolosha 0.03
Rudy Gobert -0.01
Ricky Rubio -0.02
Alec Burks -0.11
Joe Johnson -0.13
Raul Neto -0.18

I threw out O'Neale's and Jerebko's numbers due to extremely low minutes played.

Most surprising results to me:

1) Even with Rudy's monster game last night, he's still negative.
2) Donovan Mitchell is much higher than I expected
3) Most fans know Udoh's been killing it, but even against scrubs that's very impressive.
4) I knew Johnson hasn't been playing great, but it surprised me how low he was
5) I thought Burks had been doing pretty good, but his really low number argues otherwise

Discuss.

this stat is useless

this stat is useless

Not necessarily. I know the Jazz starters have struggled in the 1st quarter of nearly every game. That explains the negative for Rudy and Ricky. That's not useless; it tells the story quite well. Udoh has been very impressive defensively. Up until the last couple of games, I'd even say he's been the best defender.

And there's no question DM is creating havoc defensively, even when he isn't scoring.

Such as?

With another 7 games played (14 games total) it's time to update this:

player +- per minute
Ekpe Udoh 0.194
Thabo Sefolosha 0.051
Raul Neto 0.036
Donovan Mitchell 0.015
Rodney Hood -0.015
Derrick Favors -0.052
Joe Ingles -0.081
Ricky Rubio -0.091
Joe Johnson -0.125
Rudy Gobert -0.133
Alec Burks -0.166
Jonas Jerebko -0.202

(I threw out O'Neale and Bradley due to small number of minutes played. All other players had at least 88 total minutes)

Maybe it's time for the Neto-Mitchell-Hood-Sefolosha-Udoh lineup. :-)

You get to the guys with negative numbers it is really ugly. There were the guys that were supposed to carry us. It looks like the bench is doing its job, the starters and rotation players not so much with the exception of Mitchell.

Yep, I had the same thought.

I think Ricky is really killing that starting group. Every pass to Rudy is a turnover and guys are playing off him and really fowling things up.

I think he might be the perfect tank commander. Helping us lose... reducing Hood's value as well... He used to be able to run a PnR well, but there are too many extra hands.

Speaking of Hoods value, Benedict leaving may have cost Hood $8Mil/yr (worst case).

It doesn't even tell you who played well that particular game. There are so many variables that go into that stat that have nothing to do with the individual player's performance that it makes it essentially worthless when measuring an individual player.
