Real GM- The Accelerated Rebuild

No one knows the specifics of the new CBA, but the Jazz almost certainly will still be over the cap. So the only way they can re-sign Deron Williams is if he signs for the MLE. Not too likely.
Okur comes off the books next summer. Jazz would definitely need to move Harris, Millsap or Jefferson, but that would be doable.

Very complimentary article on Utah's Deron Williams' trade and draft.
If only Utah treated Deron right when they traded him (e.g., him not hearing it first from ESPN), then they could re-sign him in a year with this fantastic young core and he could win a Championship. Deron Williams, Alec Burks, Gordon Hayward, Derrick Favors, Enes Kanter could be an impressive starting five, if everyone develops right. I'll keep dreaming about it.

We will be much better in the short future without Williams imo.

The rumor was a multi-team deal that would have resulted in Utah getting Diaw.

Oh yeah. For as much of an AK hater I am, that was an awful deal.

It looks like Calderon has a bigger contract than Harris. If we were able to swap them and pick up a draft choice, though, it'd be nice. Same goes for Hinrich. I'd swap Harris to pick up Atlanta's 2012, assuming they still have it.

Man, it would sure be great if Burks could play PG a la Penny Hardaway. Then we could bring in another superstar wing scorer.

Looking at past champions would conflict with that.

Dallas - Dirk (not really a wing but a hybrid F/C who plays a lot like a wing and can create his own shot from anywhere)
Lakers - Kobe
Boston - Allen, Pierce
SA - Ginobili Parker
Miami - Wade
Detroit - Billups Hamilton

This should probably be who the Jazz should be dangling Millsap/Jefferson/Okur/Harris/GSW pick for.

A little skewed in your reality. Dallas had 3 seven footers.
Lakers had two, Pau and Bynum
Boston had Garnett and Perkins
SA had Duncan
Miami had Shaq
Detriot had Wallace and Wallace

We need a scoring wing, but we need a big guy as well. If Kanter and/or Favors can become elite, then Hayward and Burks and good young pg are good enough. All of those champion teams had good team defense, a big guy to get a couple of points at the end of games when they are up 10, AND good outside shooting/guy who could create his own shot.

If Kanter or Favors can become a legit big, the Jazz learn to play team defense, we are a solid SF and PG away from competing. If Kanter or Favors do not become big time, well, we are the Deron/Boozer Jazz once again, and will have to wait for some of our players to get big enough to leave and put us back in the lottery.

The problem with this list is there are hugely important big men without which these guys don't win titles.

Dallas -- Dirk was their big man. He's an enormous mismatch for 4's. Miami didn't even bother guarding him with Bosh (except when they paid for it)
Lakers -- Bynum, Gasol.
Boston -- No Way they beat the Lakers without Garnett.
SA -- Duncan
Miami -- Shaq (but definitely the weakest example)
Detroit -- They held teams to like 19 points. Rasheed and Wallace were enormous.

I completely get you're not saying a wing is all you need or that other guys aren't important. But when you've got 20 year old Favors and 19 year old Kanter, neither of whom have proven a thing, you don't just assume they'll both be great and trade established bigs. You wait to see what you've got.

Sorry, you beat me to it. I hadn't read your post yet.

It looks like Calderon has a bigger contract than Harris.

True, but in the scheme of things, it isn't much of a difference. I generally feel that Harris' value is greater even without that and the Jazz could get some additional assets if it came down to it. I also think Calderon would be a better mentor if the Jazz ever find a guy at the position that's young and needs some mentoring since his game is totally predicated on skills and fundamentals.

But whatever.

I would love a 6' 6" PG.
I also like Earl a lot too though for the time being, and I'm eager to see Harris revitalize his career in Utah. THEN they can trade him.
AND I think Heinrich would be great running the Jazz. I like him a lot better than Calderon.
