What's new

Redemption Game: Utah Jazz @ Dallas Mavericks

Our fundamentals are bad. Slow rotations, going for pump fake, allowing interior players to cut in front of you to the basket.

Favors played lazy interior defense, our guards got hit by the hesitation crossover on the perimeter about a thousand times. Just overall bad, lazy, non-aggressive defense. I'm not impressed.

In the second half the understanding and effort were better. Keep in mind that these are young guys playing a new scheme against really good teams. That will tighten up as they learn to play with each other against the same teams multiple times. The fundamentals were there during the preseason. They haven't forgot them. Houston and Dallas are two of the best offenses we will see all year. We have a lot of first and second year players getting a lot of time on the court. Sucks that we are in that position as it is not a recipe for immediate success. . .

Dallas: They have a very good team. People forget but they pushed the Spurs to seven games last year. I think they are better than last year. Dirk is impossible to stop when he is hot like tonight. Monte Ellis is one of the quickest players in the league. He just blew by Exum one time. He is the type of player you need in the playoffs. When you watch the Mavs play defense vs the Jazz you realize the Jazz have a LONG way to go on defense. The Mavs rotate to help their teammate. Jazz still get lost a lot on defense.

Coach Snyder: I like the fact he played other guys hoping they could get something out of the bench. I also liked how he pulled Kanter out of the game in the first quarter and replaced him with Booker (7:45 mark) because Kanter missed a defensive rotation. I thought Kanter would sit for a while but he was out for a very short minute. I watch Kanter the next few trips down the court and he rotated on defense both times and I just smiled. However later in the game got lost again but at least when he got pulled in sunk in temporarily.

Burke - The thing I like about Trey is, he is one of the few players the Jazz have who can get his own shot. He isn't afraid to shoot. However, there are times where he takes bad shots. The most glaring thing tonight was his passing. He does this in almost every game but tonight he was pretty bad about throwing the ball at our bigs knees coming out of the pick and roll. His passing tonight was bad. I liked his toughness and I thought he made good effort on defense. I give him a B-

Hayward - I haven't looked at the stats but overall he had an ok game not bad but not what we need. He seemed to get pushed around a little tonight and settled for outside shots. Made a few nice passes. I give him a B-.

Favors - again not looking at stats, he played ok. He got pushed around a little tonight also. I know everyone talks about his athleticism but tonight didn't seem as athletic anymore. He fumbled the ball on several occasions. I give him a C+.

Kanter - was pretty bad again. Got his shot blocked a couple of times. I know Kanter has never been known for his athleticism but the year he got hurt (prior to his injury), he seemed more athletic. His hands on rebounds are good. He use to go up much stronger. It was nice to see him make a three pt. Overall he wasn't very good. I am being nice but I give him a D+.

Burk - Foul trouble hurt him in the first half. I thought he played pretty well once he came back. I think he made 3 - 3pts. Nothing spectacular but solid. I give him a B.

Hood - he was the first off the bend. When he misses his first few shots he rarely plays well. Kid has to shoot better. I have like his defensive effort. He gets a C for effort and C- for the game.

Gobert- No I am a huge fan but tonight was evidence of how far Rudy still has to go. He got pushed around a lot. He needs to work on his upper body but also his grip. He has bad hands sometimes. I like his effort but he earns a C.

Exum - Not a lot to write about. He got called for his first carry and hopefully he makes the adjustment. Dante is going to need some time and he needs to get stronger because it seems like he is afraid to take it to the hole. Didn't play awful on defense but didn't do anything on the offense side of the ball either. I give him a D+.

Booker - except for the 3 Pt. I didn't see anything worth writing about. He gets a D+.

The rest of the group didn't do anything worth mentioning. It was nice to see Ian Clark make a three pointer.

It is obvious that the Jazz have a long way to go especially on defense. I liked the fact they didn't stop competing. It is also obvious that they aren't a playoff team and might be a while before they are. I am not surprised about the outcome because Dallas is always a tough place to play.

Well then good we keep him as a bench big and no one else is going to touch him as a RFA. If we can keep him as a Antoine Carr type backup for a good price that is a very good thing. Someone is going to pay him though. Trading him for an expiring is idiocy. He IS an expiring. . .

I think Quinn finds him a role he can succeed in. That is why I'm not worried right now, during these two games and in the preseason, I can see him tinkering and matching up parts of the offense and defense with the players. I just look at it as a 20 game preseason. Once we start playing the nancies in the East we will have a better idea of how we are developing.

Eh...its his 4th year. Kanter won't be in demand like Hayward, he never really had an efficient scoring year like Hayward did two years ago. He is in no mans land as a PF/center that can't defend or stretch the floor. Greg Monroe is better, but in the same mold as Kanter and got no significant offers at all in RFA this summer.

The people who are talking about trading any Jazz player at this point need to just stop. It is two games into the season, these kids are just wet behind the ears. It is going to take some time to learn how to play together. I am not against trading anyone if it makes the Jazz better but at least give it 20-25 games or more.

Fair enough. That's realistically what DL is going to do.

Greg Monroe knows how to play 5-man basketball. They're both plodding bigs, but that's more or less the only way they're similar. Monroe will get paid next summer, Kanter may not.

That first half was beyond brutal. The Jazz couldn't even muster a 4 point (or greater) run in it.

The second half was better, but was hard to get anything useful out of it, other than the Jazz can hit 3s.

I'm not sure what system Snyder is trying to put in place. I'm just not seeing the organizing principle here, and even less can I tell if the players actually fit that system.

With Corbin, the system was pretty vanilla. Kanter or Favors would post and Hayward or Burke would try to do too much. I'm not advocating for it. However, there was a stretch there where the Jazz were playing .500 ball. Kanter finished the season averaging 18/14, though we lost most of those games.

The Spurs' system is based on Tony Parker breaking the defense down out of the pick-and-roll and with Duncan (or Diaw) facilitating out of the high post or baseline. However, Trey Burke is no Tony Parker. He can't get by anyone or stay ahead of his defender even with a pick. And I don't know where to begin regarding the multi-talented, court-visioned passing big.

Favors is averaging 16.5 pts, 9 rebs, 2 blks and 2 stls in his first two games. That's encouraging I guess. He's at least putting up Millsap numbers. I think he can average close to that going forward.

There is ABSOLUTELY more complexity to the offense and Defense this year. Part of the problem is that it appears that Quinn is forcing rigidity at this point when teaching his system so some of the eventual wrinkles aren't being used. But there are a ton more back cuts and inside out passing that we saw last year (or for the past 3 years for that matter.) A lot of emphasis is being placed on that third pass as well that the Jazz would almost never make last year (unless it was Hayward.) On defense Quinn is enforcing assignments and pulling people if they don't follow the script. He appears to, again, be rigid in the script as we saw last night with stopping Harden from driving, but then allowing the resulting three point shot by collapsing too far. It appeared Quinn was fine with letting the team work on the first part of the problem without yet addressing the second part. It will take a full season at least before the team learns the proper balance needed to defend aggressively, with fluidity, consistently. Would have been nice to have the core learning this LAST year as a coheasive unit.

I love the concept of having a high energy guy like Booker come off the bench, but perhaps we'd be better off defensively having Kanter come off the bench. Coupling Kanter with Gobert should work pretty well offensively if Kanter can find that midrange consistency he's shown over the last few years. Gobert can mask his defensive inefficiencies. Booker will fare much better defensively against the likes of Dirk, Aldridge, Griffin, etc. I believe that Kanter doesn't have the athletic ability to stop those types of 4s.

i was really frustrated, but this team will figure it out. dallas played amazing offense in 1st quarter. hope we can guard well against suns
