Alcoholism actually is a disease. It is medically recognized as such, and although it takes incredible will to overcome it, that does not mean that an alcoholic is necessarily weak-willed. Addiction is a physical and powerful reality.

You're about as dumb as they come if you really believe there is no genetic alcoholism disease. Is cancer a choice as well? Here's a tip: do a little searching around for brominating tails and meiosis. You're probably the only guy in the developed world this is still a mystery to. Then again, it's a little more complex than what I imagine you're capable of getting in to. So take the medical profession's word for it.

It turns out "the giraffe's stretched neck" can be passed on genetically. Parents can activate genes and pass them on in the activated form. The genes can be turned off over time, but it appears harder to turn them off than on.

Some people are more susceptible to alcoholism, and in varying levels of susceptibility. Native Americans have the stigma for a reason. If you have an alcoholic parent then it's best you don't drink.
