Rookie Contract Power Rankings

Key is actually a player I learned something from draft wise. I like him during the draft. I thought he could be more of primary and that his off the dribble jumper was a potential premium skill. All of that was actually right. But I was too quick to dismiss his defensive concerns and a big reason why I did that was because I thought he’d play point and have positional size and it would work out because he’s a fiery competitor ….turns out it doesn’t matter if you don’t have the IQ, skill, and instincts to play defense.

Also, that archetype is straight up in the grave. There’s no use to drafting one, you can a really good one for free on the trade market.

That’s even worse. He has the tools but has chosen to be lazy af and not give a damn. The guy is so overrated and considered by so many on this board.

The tanking kind of skews everything with this team.
Having the tools is good no matter what. Being lazy and not giving a damn is bad but may be a product of the team he is playing for literally trying to lose each game. That kind of culture can have a negative impact on the mentality of a player.

I bet Washington and Charlotte fans (and the philly fans during the process) do a lot of criticizing their players for laziness and bad attitudes as well. And I think we have been tanking harder and more intentionally than any other team the last few years. We are purposely underachieving like crazy.

Very rarely does the “sucks at defense but has the tools for defense” ever get much better. Yes defensive ability is tied to length and athleticism, but it’s also a skill like everything else.
I do think it likely gets better with more experience/maturity, better schemes/coaching, and better culture though.

I think they are just trying to latch onto the dream that we found our DM replacement and he will break out any day now! Watch, it's gonna happen. And.....................NOW! Nope. Ok. And........................................................................................................................NOW!

Huh, not yet I guess.

But you hit the nail on the head.

Yep, just look at DM. If he gave the same effort on defense he does on offense he would be in the fringe discussion for GOAT, but he doesn't, so he isn't, and he will go down as one of the best scorers the game has seen, but won't win anything with it as a result.

DM is also a little different where he was actually a good defender once upon a time. Coming into the league he was a defensive prospect. In his case, it actually does come down to how much effort he's willing to put in. He has the skill, ability, talent, IQ ect to be a good defender. Key has never been a good defender and has probably never been asked to play defense in his life. So beyond effort, he needs hard skills/abilities to develop as well.

Keyonte has to take a leap this year or he's pretty much done if we get Peterson.

Plus we all know his offensive game is either hit or miss. I'd rather have seen some defensive highlights
