I have heard some humorous remarks elsewhere about this chic.
It's actually a classic case of white guilt. . . induced of course by the moral preachments of the progressive clergy that presides over the re-engineering of American cultures using advanced mass mesmerizing techniques. . . .you know the type, all the folks who aren't black who are making a bleeding heart crusade to right the wrongs of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Fundamentalist Christians singing "Amazing Grace" and revisiting the repentance of John Newton in a virtual daily self-flagellation ritual sorta do the same thing. But Liberals have no Savior who can forgive them, so they have this OCD dementia about making other white folks share their massive guilt.
Another turn of the worm puts it out that some folks make a career of being victims, like the fall down artists on the curbs of big cities pretending to be run over by cars. You can make a nice living being black if you're willing to use the tactics of Jesse Jackson. Do local NAACP officials get salaries, or do you have to be some uber-rich elite to be on the staff?

other than that, if it were just a meaningless little person's "thing" to assume perceived cultural habits and traditions of others, or to assume a new ethnicity or race, how is this any different from expecting Mexicans to come to America and become Republicans?

Some families are dysfunctional on a mode of circling the wagons and shooting at one another, like black youth in the inner cities in America, or cowboys in the saloons of the old West. It's insane. How can anyone know "why"?
Perhaps, though, it was an attempted confrontation/deprogramming tactic intended to reclaim a daughter from the some ethnic cult. You know, a group that demands such extreme coherence of belief and opinion that your life will be in danger if you step "outside the box". But again, it's insane, even at that.
So, having exhausted all the wild-hare possibilities, most likely the parents just wanted her to come visit them once in a while without making a dramatic, defiant tour de force about her superiority and/or her race.
I've said it before, human psychology and culture have cyclical patterns, and however we try to follow the trends, we eventually fall out of orbit and come home to who we are, actually. Most of our life effort is aimed at denying our natural identity. Poor people work hard, sometimes, hoping to be rich. Rich people park their Benzes and run around the park in hobo rags hoping to feel "real". When the glitter of mass media hype and change-agent propagandists shakes off our costumes, we'll likely find out nothing mattered but our human rights.
I studied Russian history, language and literature a little, and I think the saddest thing about it all was all those "progressives". . . . the intellectuals. . . the students who learned Marxist theory in college in France. . . sons of wealthy gentry under "The Enlightenment", who with fervent faith went home to make things right in mother Russia. . . the idealistic utopian dreamers who really believed they were working for a better life in Russia. . . those talented and persuasive "change-agents". .. .
When the Czar was gone, when Lenin was in complete control, he looked over his shoulder to ask. . . "Now, who could unseat me from my throne?". So he sent his police out and rounded up all those people who have been effective in putting him in power, and threw them all in prison.
Alexandr Solzhenitsyn wrote of that first wave of Gulag inmates, and told the legends of how they shook the prisons with their shouts and rage, but could not break the walls or bars. Believing in a cause, and finding you have been betrayed by those you worked to put in power, is a bigger let down for an atheist than it is for a religious cult victim.
Russia today is trying to match America for having an effective, powerful, stable "elite" like our Rockefellers and such, who can bear sway over the nation. China is building a matching set of "elites". It's never been about "belief" in Marxism or anything. It's about power. It's about concentrating power. It's about taking out your competitors. There is no coming "New World Order", there is a coming world war.
I'm saying this for all the little guys in here who believe the prevailing rhetoric of our time, and waste your existence fretting about people being people, wanting to change them and change the world to some ideal. You've been sold a bill of goods that's just worthless.
It doesn't matter what "race" you are, or what "gender". If you let power-hungry demagogues divide you and set you against one another over these kinds of quarrels, it always goes to a net loss of human rights. If we lose the right to hate, we lose the right to love. If we lose the right to choose our ideas or ways, we have lost our humanity. Equal standing under the law is essential to deny an "elite" the inordinate power of control.

If I understand correctly, the parents have known of the deception for a while (though maybe not that she had leveraged it into an NAACP job). When they were asked about her lineage they told the truth. They said they raised their children to be truthful and they weren't going to play a role in the lie.
