Solving For Tanking, We're smart, let's figure it out

Draft a franchise player then immediately move your pieces to build around him. Not rocket science. Don't tank for the sake of tanking.
This post is not idea to eliminate tanking though.

Like its kind of wild to me the Spurs arent going full steam ahead given Wemby already has the ability to play like a top 5 player in the NBA. I wouldnt want to waste any time while he's a super cheap player.

I love Flagg, and certainly think he has top 10 player in the NBA potential, but IDK if that's going to be the case his first four years in the NBA.

So like the jazz have the wizards pick and the jazz play the wizards. Jazz want to win the game and the wizards also want to win the game. What is the dirty stuff?
I was referring to the possiblity that a team might try to play extra physical against a team they own their pick in order to improve it through injuring their players. It was a dumb comment though.

I think the real disadvantage of the proposals where you don't own your own picks is how do you trade picks? I guess there would still be ways to do it, but seems very complicated.

I can re submit my idea of "relegation lite." You get the worst record in the NBA, you are locked into spot 3. Second worst? Spot 4. 3-7 get a bit better odds for 1-2, 8-12 get the lower level, but still have a healthy shot. Because most years have 1 or 2 top guys, teams will fight like hell to not be bottom two. But if you are, you won't completely drop to 5 like Detroit has the past 2 years. Give a huge payout to teams that make the playoffs and play in that the lottery teams don't get. The 4 losing play-in teams play each other for the last 4 spots after the non-play-in/playoff teams pick, winners get the better pick.

I don't see the value of tanking at all in this scenario.

So I think there are some good ideas and discussion in this thread. I had originally intended to compile some of the ideas and create a poll to vote on which ideas we like the best. I'm not sure if that would be a good or bad idea at this point. Any thoughts? Should I create a poll?

I didn't read everyone's posts but there was one I saw somewhere I thought worked the best. Once a team is mathematically eliminated from the playoffs, the draft order is determined by wins. The more wins you have the better the position you get. It incentivizes winning at the end of the year.

Wemby's longevity is a much more important question than money. He's been pretty healthy, so people have started acting like all the fears about his possible fragility were baseless. But the facts haven't changed: NBA basketball is incredibly taxing for a body like his, and the health track record for guys taller than 7'2'' over the years isn't great.

I agree that the Spurs should be moving as fast as possible.

From 2032/later on (the first season you can't trade your 1st as of now), draw the league in two fifteen team sets. In alternating years you pick either 1-15 or 16-30. Inside of those groups, you won't have equal odds, but you improve them by having the better growth in winning percentage through previous three seasons, than other teams in your group. It should incentivize winning culture. The point is, you are where you are, bottom, middle or top, so you can always keep developing and getting better at your pace, and it will be rewarded. If there will be big number of injuries in your team, you can apply from the league a some sort of relief, but then also the league will have an entry to look at the injured players health to confirm it

Give one of the teams in the playin a guarantee for a top 3 lottery spot - if they don't get one of the top two then you draw again and again until a playin team gets a spot. So you are highly rewarded for barely getting into the playoffs and you are rewarded for being one of the bottom two but everything in between is a miserable spot.

This might be the worst proposal I have ever heard.
