Stars Season Opener Game Thread: 8PM Mountain Time

If he had come in healthy and done what he needed there was a path to playing time that was easy to see based on projected skillset. Its not there yet (we think anyway... its been literally like 10 minutes) but he's 19 so why all the hand wringing.
Maybe because it feels like the goalposts are low key moving for this rebuild project? This was supposed to be a quick, 1-2 year thing. Meanwhile, Hendricks is two years away from being two years away.

Keyonte has been a nice surprise, but let's not get carried away. All the advanced stats say he's been among the worst players on the team so far. He needs to start, but it'll be a long while before he's a guy who wins you games.

It depends on when you first saw the goal posts. Last year after the Rudy Don trades no one would have said 1-2 years. After a promising year I thought we’d kind of tread water for a year or two unless we made a big trade… which is still on the table. Reality is setting in and it may be another 2-3 years before we are in the playoffs unless they step on the accelerator. If the lights click on with Hendricks it will help for sure but that alone isn’t going to make us a playoff team.

Watch Keyonte win us our next game with a spectacular AST. He's pretty good.

I am sure I contributed to it. I still think if you asked him to do the Ochai from last season he could get on the court for 10-15 minutes and survive. I really didn't think he would come in and play 25-30 minutes a night and be some big positive. There are so few rookies that are... even at the top of the draft. I also think once a guy misses the whole summer league it impacts their rookie year fairly significantly. Unless they are on a pure tanking team and being gifted minutes it would be hard seeing guys with no summer league coming in and playing a role in the first 15-20 games of the year.

I just think the idea that he's ready now is not why the Jazz took him. I think they knew it was a project but maybe hoped for some utility. If they think he is NBA ready they don't go get Collins imo... if the biggest appeal is "he can play right away" why do that?

I think the biggest sign they knew he wasnt NBA ready was the Paul Reed attempted signing. They would have got Collins regardless of how ready Hendricks was. There is nothing about Collins being on the team that prevents Hendricks from playing 15-20 mpg.

I'm referring to last season, because we were clearly a playoff team before Danny decided to pull the plug. With a few reinforcements, we might have made some real noise.

The consensus opinion was that the Jazz rebuild just got accelerated in a major way. But now it's looking like we're back in squre one.

Right but a three year deal and a big contract… like if they thought he would be ready day one you don’t make a multi year add like that.

I think it’s a sign that they aren’t really trying to bank on any rookie. Look at the mess Key had to compete with… they aren’t necessarily clearing the way for any rookie to play day one but if they are good they can earn time.

I think hoping Taylor could play 15ish minutes was reasonable and it would have been a benefit but not a the main reason he was drafted. If that’s their rationale we have bigger problems than Taylor being a bust… that’s not how you draft unless you are picking upper class men at the end of the first.

I don’t think that was the consensus. I certainly didn’t think going from Mike Conley to THT was an acceleration lol. I supported the tank for all the reasons one should… but not because it’s a huge accelerator.

Also… with regard to Paul Reed I think that was a value play. Just like most of DAs moves.

Yeah, that's why I said we were a playoff team BEFORE the yard sale and handing THT the reins. There was a lot of reason for optimism.

Drafting someone besides Hendricks wouldn't change anything in this post

What does that have to do with Hendricks making what was a quick rebuild into a long one now.

Not really. They signed the contract so it would basically be a one year deal. Perfect to let Hendricks get ready and takeover in his 2nd season.
They signed it so it could be a 1 year deal for us, but that if he was good it could be a 3 year deal for us or whoever acquired him. We could have guaranteed the other years whether or not we hit the second round. Gives us or the acquirer all the upside and very little downside.

The tricky part was just making it essentially a two year commitment at least if Sixers matched. I think they knew it would get matched and it was more of an middle finger to Morey to structure it that way.

I don't think it was a reaction to them think Taylor was further away than what they thought when they drafted him. I don't even think he was practicing at that point. If that's what you want to think I'm fine with it... its not irrational but my current theory is DA is a value hunter first and foremost.

Just tell her you're taking notes for a JFC discussion, she'll probably love that.

"Honey, I'm sacrificing my sleep tonight so that I can watch the guys who are not good enough to play for the Jazz play some guys who the Jazz might be able to draft if they are really bad this year. It's important so that I can discuss what happens with strangers on the internet. Also, there's no way I can get to the dishes tonight, I'm way too busy. "

The other day I was watching the Stars game and my GF was like "Oh you want to watch the game?" (she will "watch" Jazz games with me sometimes which is more just she will pay attention for a few minutes at a time while she does something else) and I told her it's too embarrassing. I watched it alone in the bedroom on the computer.

Hey it could be worse, you could be watching middle school games with PGAB.
