Statue of responsibilty

will it happen. will it still be build?
now that America is on the brink of death. a statue like this would help america come out of this hole.
a positive symbol with a message.

maybe a foreign country needs to give one to the USA just like the statue of liberty. or maybe as a present from the EU.

some folks consider liberty to mean freedom from responsibility or obligation, as in feeling like you should get a job or take care of your family.

The sense of true responsibility in America went out the window during the 60's and 70's, fully exemplified now in the current "me first" generation and in the decline of the quality of Presidential candidates. All too few people have a sense of personal responsibility. It is a dwindling resource.

They've sold out the American dream for a sense of entitlement, indeed.

THEY TOOK OUR JOBS!

Just like the people in the 1910s when they said tht about the 1890s? Or the people in the 1040s when they said that about the 1010s?

Wow you are old if you personally experienced this so you have objective evidence "they" said that.

I also noted that you didn't try to deny it was right, you just tried to point out it wasn't original. The fall of the Roman empire, I speculate, progressed in a somewhat similar manner. Just because we are apparently repeating history does not mean it is benign.

Does written evidence count? YOu can find writing across the ages in this regard.

The original statement (by you) is not specific enough to be right or wrong in an objective fashion. YOu just expressed feeling that every generation seems to express as the next generation comes into adulthood.

The fall of the Roman empire, I speculate, progressed in a somewhat similar manner. Just because we are apparently repeating history does not mean it is benign.

If the US government falls , it will be for muchmore specific reasons than "people just aren't responsible anymore".

A link to examples of the nostalgia effect? Why? If it turns out that you can read for yourself where people have always said this, will this affect your assessment of the source of your opinion? Just curious?

I am just wondering if you can back up your assertion that this is plethorically documented throughout the ages.

I fully admit my opinion is entirely anecdotal. I did grow up with 2 grandparents who were in their 20's during the 1920's. I can tell you that, in discussions I had with them, they felt like the late-40's into the late-50's were the golden era. They felt the 30's and 40's were simply destroyed by the depression and war. They told me the 20's were decadent and full of crime and general deceit. So from my 2 eye-witnesses (who grew up in different parts of the country, by the way, one in the north-east, one in the west), I would say that there was no general feeling that the roaring 20's were WAY better than the 50's. My most liberal grandfather believed that generally in that time between the war and the flower child days of the late-60's there was generally a more patriotic environment and people tended to act more with a sense of integrity than either before or after.

Obviously there has been, and always will be crime and bad people etc. But even the crime statistics, normalized for population, bear this out with significant increases from say 1960 to 2000. It has kind of leveled off over the past decade at roughly double the crime rate of 1960.

But I won't provide the link, since I am not sure if you would accept any evidence that might be contrary to your opinion.

The War on Drugs...Not surprisingly, those terrible 20's your G-parents talked about corresponded with prohibition. Huh.

I'm just looking for a reason to spend half an hour finding links on the nostalgia effect. Satisfying your curiousity does not sufficiently motivate me.

Good enough for me.

I mayhave stated that badly. I meant that people in the 1950s would talk about how the decay of the 1920s was resposible for the decline of America.

But I won't provide the link, since I am not sure if you would accept any evidence that might be contrary to your opinion.

Actually, your crime statistics are exactly what I would expect. Of course, my expectation is that crime rates are linked to the percentage of population that are young males, whyich explains both the increase and decline. What's your s=explanation for the recent decline? A return to personal responsibility?

I believe the latter part of your statement is entirely false. Crime, surprisingly, has actually dramatically improved over the years, if we're talking a per capita basis. I saw FBI/US Census Bureau (I forget which) crime statistics a couple weeks ago and recall that most felonies (maybe it was only some?) seem to have dropped from previously high points in certain years. I'm too drunk to look that **** up now.
