Here is another fun one I am fighting the city of Chino about. Over the last weekend we had a cop driving through our warehouse complex here, an area of about 15 warehouses of which 9 belong to our company. He ran into our own campus security team, and they chatted for a bit late on Saturday night. The security team mentioned we had been having some alarm issues on a couple of our buildings, but in NO WAY did he ask for any help with it. It is an alarm company issue and our own security team was on it. He just mentioned it as they cop asked why we he was at the building at that time on a Saturday night. The cop said "hey no problem, I will just keep an eye as I drive by, no biggie. I drive by a few times over the weekend."
So yesterday my security manager comes in and hands me a notice. We are being assessed $1500 for added police surveillance over the weekend, outside of normal hours, and a $500 emergency contact fee. So $2k for "sure I will keep an eye out when I drive by anyway". The kicker is we checked our surveillance footage and the only time we can confirm any cops were in the area at all was WHEN THIS GUY WAS TALKING TO OUR SECURITY TEAM. And at no other time during the weekend.
Of course we question the interaction between our security guy and the cop. First, I know my security manager, he is the best. In no way would he have "requested" anything like this. And, even better, he had recorded his interaction with the cop, because he is a person of color and he works in security so he has learned to kick on a recording device EVERY time he is around a cop. So we watched that, and it was completely benign. In fact in the video you can hear him saying "no worries bro, we got this" to the cops offer to keep an eye out.
So I am gathering all the info to dispute the charge. We already notified them we are disputing and they said it was denied, within like a half hour of us sending the dispute email, before we could even provide any evidence! LOL
But this is not my first rodeo, Nothing will come of it other than a wasted afternoon for me and my exec admin and we will still be stuck with the fine.
Sometimes I completely get the sentiment of **** the police.
