Taylor Hendricks Hype Thread

JHS is shooting 41% from 3 in the GLeague. His sample size is way too small in the NBA. His shot looks good. Hendricks shot currently does not look good.

G league. lololololololololol. Some guys just shrink when they get to the big time.

If we were to combine NBA and G League numbers, JHS is 19/55 (34.5%) and Hendricks is 45/36 (33.1%). JHS puts up 4.97 threes per 36. Hendricks puts up 7.23 threes per 36. Hendricks skews better in NBA, JHS skews better in G League. JHS shot 33.3% in college on 4.2 attempts per 40. TH shot 39.4% in college on 5.3 attempts per 40.

Make of that what you will.

The cool thing last night was you saw the formula I've been talking about. Shoot threes and get a few hustle baskets and you can have 15 efficient point per game... and build from there. If he goes 2-5 from three he's right there. Its the Hornets... I get it, but last night he showed why I thought he could exist on a basketball court as a rookie and not kill you. He did it while still figuring out what the hell he's supposed to be doing.

I think he will oscillate between 1-5 and 3-5 from three on any given night likely falling in the 35% range. He's much more active on defense and the glass than he was early in the season. If he can do what he did last night activity wise then he is less reliant on the good shooting nights... and the nights the shot is falling it will be more like 20 points with 8-9 rebounds than 12/9.

He also avoided having the tragic offensive sequence when dribbling and passing last night.

I've always believed the bolded....but when he didn't meet that expectation I got flamed for saying I expected him to do this. When he wasn't playing, people were acting like I was crazy for thinking this.

Oh I did too. it was clear Simone/KO were just better. Imagine we don't make the John Collins trade and we have all that cap space and TH had room to grow all season. The rotation was just crowded.

And I'm fine with how it worked out as I think G League likely helped for a bit. So whatevs. Just amazing how impatient we are as fans and how quickly we like to determine winners and losers. shrug.

I just thought it was funny that I got flamed, by people who were obviously pro-TH, for having any kind of expectation for TH. Like it was a crime to think he could actually play and I was being totally unreasonable for not expecting him to be a G-League player. The goalposts were moving like nothing I've ever seen before. It was like their identity to be right about TH, so as long as they had piss low expectations they were right no matter what he did. I don't actually think it's being impatient to expect some rookies to have an easier time contributing, and then when they don't to be disappointed by that. Having expectations of a player means you're higher on that player, but we got it twisted on this forum.

Part of the deal with Hendricks is that his game is extremely limited....but the other side of that is that he can be a contributor in the extremely limited role. To me he was always a prospect that *should have been able to contribute earlier. It's much easier to be a contributor as someone who never dribbles and just hustles versus a player who is tasked to be a lead ball handler.

I haven't been discouraged by Taylor's play....I guess the thing that makes me nervous is that he doesn't seem to be getting rave reviews behind the scenes, or at least that's what we know and Hardy doesn't seem super enthused to play him. Wouldn't surprise me if he has some Rudy Gobert phenomena attached to him where players don't respect him because he's not a hooper.

If that's what we actually thought about Simone, why would it not cause alarms if TH was stashed behind him? I think that scenario shows the lengths that people went to defend TH's honor. Like the expectations got so low that it was completely normal for him to be behind Simone (who we thought was getting cut) and Luka.

There were also several iterations of the rotation. Took a long time for Hardy to land on something that worked and the injuries also opened up different rotations. The rotation was very fluid and different guys were in and out of the rotation. Positions were flexible enough that pretty much anyone could fit into an open spot. To me, it raised an eyebrow that TH was not even in those considerations....whether it being TH actually being terrible or Hardy simply not believing in him. I still think it was super reasonable to expect him to be in the mix and I didn't expect him to be this raw....or I didn't expect his lack of feel to be so apparent and impactful. But that's what comes with expectations, the possibility of not meeting them. Maybe some people were quick to call him bust...idk. I also think people were bending over backwards to lower their supposed expectations of him. What I know for sure is that me having some expectations of him being an NBA caliber player caught me some heat. Even now, I would say he's probably worse that I expected, but that's because my expectations weren't piss low.

About the negative stuff....I think everyone likes him as a person, that's not what I was talking about. It does not seem like they think much of his game atm. I mean, we had that whole conversation about the locker room and what they thought about him. TH is a guy who we applaud when he's able to string a few dribbles together...probably not a player that stands out in camp amongst players.

I've definitely seen guys look him off... specifically Clarkson so I'm sure the trust is not there. I think that's true. I think Rudy got an extra level of distrust and hate just being a confident French kid. He still gets so much more hate than he should.

I'm a chucker so I freaking love playing with guys that will defend and stay in the corner. Give me 3 or 4 of those guys lol. I think Jazz players will come around if he keeps playing like he did yesterday.

Wasn't Hendricks one of the guys we were unable to work out in person before the draft? If that's the case, do you think the Jazz evaluation on him would have differed going into the draft if they had gotten a more up-close look?

I think he had to shut things down early because of an injury. I am sure they got enough looks at him though. Obviously they preferred the 8 guys that went ahead of him though because JZ decided to tell people what the draft board looked like for no reason lol.
