The Non-Jazz NBA Thread in the Jazz Section

Wood is 31st in the league in scoring per 36 at 23 pts per 36... right between Pascal Siakam and Jordan Clarkson. He was 32nd in the league in TS% last season. Getting a high volume scorer who is insanely efficient at the minimum is a good get... even if he is *** on defense and a douche in the locker room. Lakers (and Lebron) have had success with talented guys who are assholes... notably Schroeder and Howard. If the locker room stuff gets untenable then you cut him... easy peasy.
The opinion of people who just stat watch and actually watch him play are drastically different.

lol... when you got no leg to stand on go ahead and jump to the "eye test" or "you don't know ball".

I have watched him. He is much better than a minimum player. Both the eye test and stats will tell that story pretty obviously. No downside and good upside. Anyone saying its a bad signing is just blind hating.

Hilarious that some dudes will cape for Zach Lavine on a huge contract and a big acquisition cost and then **** on a guy like Wood at the minimum with no acquisition cost.

What was interesting about Woods Dallas stint was that he almost exclusively played center there. He subbed for Dwight Powell more than anyone and only shared 175 total minutes on the court with either Powell or McGee (so 10% out of his 1738 total minutes).

Yet he somehow managed to have only +0.2 offensive rating impact compared to his subs (per CTG on/off), who were almost exclusively Powell and McGee. On the other side of the ball, he was 2.8 points worse defensively than his subs which is not surprising. That on/off impact cost Dallas 6 wins according to CTG estimate models.

Hilarious to like a player who is good and dislike a player who isn't. So funny.

Oh you like the player any team would give 30 million to more than the guy teams won't even give the MLE? How silly.

With teams that have so much of their offensive identity tied into one player the on/off stuff gets wonky… Luka/Jokic/Giannis/Lebron etc. Powell has a uniquely good chemistry with Luka… the on/off stuff with Wood makes sense to me given the context. Despite what some posters have said Wood doesn’t make every team he has played on worse… his net career on/off diff is +2. The impact isn’t as much as you’d like given the volume… but there are many players that have similar fact patterns. Doesn’t mean they suck.

I wasnt implicating he sucks. Ive watched him play and he is definitely way better offensively than Powell. Way way more than the 0.2 point margin. And Wood did infact share the court with Luka for over 50% of his minutes. So wasnt like he was left on an island offensively.

That was maybe more of an indictment to Kidd for how he utilized him and what kind of things they did schemewise. I mean how do you neuter Woods offensive impact to match that of Powell? Did you just sub out all your capable shooters when he came on?

I'm not too bother by it though, so wont dig any deeper.

Because Powell is the better player

Situations like this are always a huge boon for people who laugh at no-cost acquisitions. If they are right, they can celebrate. If they are wrong, just appeal to “well 29 other teams thought the same thing.”

The fact that teams weren't jumping over each other should let you know that your assessment of cost is not accurate
